tough times...

i think i may have really disturbed my fish by changing the water while my temp was increased to clear ich-- I have a really sick female that has been so for weeks and has not eaten, a male platy that is super skinny and has stopped eating, another high fin (my fave dragonfly ) with the cualiflower from another tertra starting on her fin, oh it's stressingme out-- should i have not been changing the water as it was most likely cooler than the tank temp?? even more are falling ill now-- (just after today's water change and day 1 treatmet of melafix) one of my phantoms is swimming like she has swim baldder-- all upside down and sideways i'm so concerned and getting frustrated-- do i have too many fish in the tank?? and why would my fry be the healthiest fish in the tank?? is there anything else anybody thinks i can do?? here i was thinking i was doing a good thing with the water changes... my water parameters are good-- 6.8 PH --nitrate 20 -- nitrite 0 -- KH 120 lila

Re: tough times...

well, i'm so to report that neither one of my girls made it through the night-- perhaps i should have started the melafix sonner -- the others that were starting to act funny yesterday are better it seems-- no one is hanging out near the bottom and everyone ate this morning-- i hate to lose fish and i'm so sad now we have to get more phantoms beacuse they (2 left) will be quite lonesome without RED!! She was so strong and healthy i don't know what happened-- well i am going to continue the melafix treatment unless anyone says othwerwise and wait till i have a good healthy tank again until i get more phantoms-- and no more platy's-- we've got the fry yet to grow to full size and they are hearty and healthy-- please keep my fish in your thoughts--LILA

Re: tough times...

Lila I'm so sorry!!!! Sounds like you did all you could Water changes very rarely cause a problem, in fact they are the first line of defense.
Finish up your Melafix treatments, follow the directions as to water changes during treatment. keep us posted.

Re: tough times...

i am so distraught-- even thought the temp may have been different, you don't think that would have done it?? melafix says to change 25% of the H2o after the 7 days is up-- i am wondering now if the melafix alone will treat all my problems-- i jsut noticed tonight that there are soime fish that have stringy clear like feces-- what is that if i remember correctly that is sign of parasites?? i'm not having a goodf day-- it's been more bad news after bad news-- TGIF

Re: tough times...

The temp would have had to have been a whole lot different to even affect them, and then probably wouldn't have killed them.
Continue your treatment per instructions on package and keep a close eye on them. Hope your having a better day today. Keep us posted

Re: tough times...

I am so sorry about your fish. It is a horrible thing to have sick fish because they cannot tell you where it hurts and how it hurts and let you feel their heads and pat them and make you feel that you have been their mommy and done the things mommies do when you have sick children. You did all you could do and must not beat yourself up for what has happened. It is a very sad thing but the things like this do happen and sometimes there are no explantions for them.

It is a hard thing but do concentrate on the little ones you have left and the joy you have from them and remember those you lost in the days when they were not ill and the joy they gave you rather than the distress you felt while they were ill. We are here for you and will be available if you just need to talk about what you are needing to do or how you feel.

You do have my deepest sympathies.

Re: tough times...

thank you so much for your kind words and sympathy-- you guys are so sweet! today was the water change day after the melafix treatment-- rinsed the filter, added stress coat and cycle-- and will go from there-- eveyone still seems to be hanging in there as well as myself-- only two left that still are not eating-- we'll see--
Again THNAK YOU!! i can't say it enough-- this time was really hard and i couldn't have done it without you!! LILA
