New Info

I was on here about a month ago asking for advice about dying fish. My fish were dying and I couldn't figure out why. Everyone suggested doing water changes. Even though I tested my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, I thought this was a good idea. My fish kept dying. I noticed that I would lose a fish or two the day after every water change. I brought this up to an employee at the store where I buy my fish and he asked what I use for a water conditioner. I had recently changed from "AmQuel" to "AmQuel plus." He informed me that they stopped carrying "AmQuel plus" because the only difference between the two is that "plus" supposidly "removes nitrates." It does this by Oxydizing the nitrates. Using up a large ammount of oxygen in the water, thus suffocating fish. This explaines why I lost all of my danios and guppies and none of my neons. The latter uses less oxygen than the former. I switched back to regular "AmQuel" and haven't had any problems yet, but I'm still nervous about buying more fish.
Has anyone ever heard anything about this? Does anyone have any more information about this? All thought would be appreciated.

Re: New Info

I have never heard that before. It could also be that your tank water ph is very diferent than water straight out of the tap. It could be a number of things. I have never had a problem using amquel plus when my ammonia or nitrites were high.

Re: New Info

I use the Amquel+ all the time now and have had no problems and my fish are very sensitive little fish (Otos) who are sometimes hard to keep unless they are in very good water conditions. I change water sometimes 2 - 3 times a week depending on my Nitrates due to the high Nitrates in our area and have never had a loss since I started using the Amquel+.

I was using StressCoat and while I still do it my fish hurt themselves somehow, I don't use it on a regular basis anymore.
