clear/white stringy poo: Is it just constipation or do they need meds ?

I was hoping someone could help me with this. My Platys all have the white/clear stringy poo happening now (started with just one severly bloated one).

The lady at the LFS did not think I needed meds and gave me a frozen food called Daphnia that is fortified with vitamins etc. She said to feed that exclusively for a week and that should do it.

I'm not sure what the white stringy poo actually means. From what I read, it could be parasites.

There is zero amonia and low or zero nitrates. If I just feed the frozen Daphnia do I risk losing all my fish because I'm not medicating ?

I am thinking that white stringy poo is dropsy, especially w/ the change in feeding and the swelling in the fish. Also w/ the water conditions being good. I would medicate, google the treatment for platies... I read one for cichlids w/ half epsom salt and half table salt and I know that it worked for someone I know, I just don't know about livebearers. I would def google the treatment first.

Constipation starts this way too. I just heard about the med you are talking about,,,can't find the thread,,,go to home page and type it in...tons of information on it. You can also try a day of no feeding, then a pea or the Daphnia as directed on the container(or if you find better info. here,,,which is highly likely lol). Don't feed them until you know what you are dealing with. Good Luck.

White/clear poo usually indicates an internal parasite problem. Your LFS sounds pretty good and I think Daphina would be a good food for this week. I would fast them at least 1 day too. Parasite Clear tablets would be what I'd use to treat the parasites.

You know, I hadn't thought about this. The body's response to stomach/intestinal parasites is usually vomiting/diarrhea, in order to starve the parasites out. Daphnia/fasting would have similar results. A good idea to start with.
