Death in the Family

Well i have had a 20 gallon tank going for about 2 months now and I just had some unusual deaths in the family last night; however I think it was more of a murder. I have 1 yellow cichlid, 2 platinum molly male/female, 1 pleco, and had 2 red wag fish male/female. The two wag fish had some Fry about 3 weeks ago. yeah i probably should have removed them from the tank but I was doing an ecosystem experiment documenting the behavior and aging of the Fry. This is just for my own kicks and giggles. Well everything was great until now. This morning I turned on the light to my aquarium ready to feed only to be saddened by the sight of one dead red wag, and NO FRY . I checked all my other fish for any disease but no one has anything. So my conclusion is that the red wag ate to much and died, since there are no signs of disease. The body of the fish was partially eaten therefore i believe that in the mist of a feeding frenzy the Fry were eaten by the new comer Marcus, the yellow cichlid, or my platinum molly's. I will update this article if any signs of disease come up soon, but for now that is my conclusion. Anyone have any opinions. To add to the story I just got Marcus last week thats why i think he might hand had a "fin" in the situation. Well later guys rock on. Thank you for your time, and have a great day.

sorry to hear that. I would say that the cichlid did have a fin in it. it will probably put it fin in it some more too.

welcome to our forum. Some confusion here....your tank info says 40gal, your post says 20 gal. Are there 2 tanks? African ciclids really do best in a tank with just african ciclids. The red wag fry were like bait fish for it, I really do believe. The other death may have been from being chased relentlessly and stresses of being new to the tank...ciclids are very territorial species, they act badly if other fish are added AFTER they have been in the tank and established a dominance.
And when death in a tank occurs, the instinct of the other fish is to do away with it because they seem to know that the decay will foul their environment.
There is lots of info here to help you, read up ...and ask all the questions you need to....
