Not my month for cories...

So I got 3 new panda cories, one died a couple of days after I brought him home (not sure why. Water tests are fine.), figured it was just transition... So I'm down to 2 of them now, and I look into my tank tonight and one of them has little red spots on his side, by his gills. They look like individual raised spots from what I can tell, not like an inflamed gill.

I'm going to post a picture or two. Ignore my camera hog tetras. They should be actors or something, always trying to get into the pictures! It's the corie on the right, btw!

Anyone know what this could be? It's not something that I'm familiar with...

sorry for the loss =(

huh... I'll see if I can find anything on those red spots, could be a gill fungus or something, but this is total speculation, I've never owned any pandas, just an overactive imagination...

on a higher note (I seem to have a lot of those) I took pictures of my fish too. lol. no one has looked at them so far =( neways, I'll see what I can find.

so how long have you had the cories? IMO it looks like bacterial/fungus. But also are the gills pumping fast? or have you seen him scraping against anything? those 2 behaviours could indicate parasites, like gill flukes which need an anti parasitic med. If it were me I'd dose with a fungus eliminator first. All the others gills/breathing okay?
I'd keep a look out...sometimes cories will show something first, and then others could show it also.

they might be anchor worms, but I need a more defined picture for that =\

I've had the cories for about a month and a half now. Yeah, his gills were pumping pretty fast, but I haven't seen him scraping on anything. (He's been hiding for most of the day, which isn't normal for my cories.)

Do you have a recommendation on the meds I should be getting? The only thing I have at the moment is Trisulfa, which I've used for fin rot in the past... I think it said something on it about Gill Disease too. I guess I'm setting up my q tank and making a fish store run tomorrow.

Thanks for the info!

=\, strange... well I have read that if it were ulcers they would be bleeding, and if it were the anchor worm things, there would be the red spots, but also a worm hanging off, scroll down and take a look at this site..

I'm sorry I am not of better help =\

I would consider getting Jungle brand "Fungus Eliminator" or"Fungus Clear". I have the bottle..it says for red streaks/bloches on fins OR body. I don't think it's anchor worms, cuz you'd see 'em hang on the body. The bacteria/fungus meds will help if it is gill disease...which is fast pumping/swollen gills/with slime coming out and the swim is a jerky motion, or the redness, so you could cover 2 possibilities with one med. It still might be gil flukes, but a better sign for that is scraping on objects. Don't forget to remove the carbon . Good Luck...hope I've helped some.

PROGRESS! i might have found it!

here is someones similar sounding case (quite similar...)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just added three peppered cory's to a 6 week old tank (20 Gallon). One died the 2nd day and it looks like he'd had fin rot or something like it for a while. The second seems to be thriving hapily but the third has these red spots that are getting bigger and redder. They seem to be right where his pectoral fins are attached to his body. I don't think it's his gills but I could be wrong. I've tried Melafix for three days and the spots are even worse. He is swimming and eating, but I'm worried he might die like the first one Any ideas
and a response which doesn't seem as accurate but might help anyways.
Haemorrhagic septicaemia is caused by one or more of the bacterial class of Aeromonas, Pseudomonas or Vibrio. these bacterial species are common in many apparently "healthy" aquaria as latent infection waiting to happen. happen it does when fish are in poor and/or stressed condition for some reason, which can include toxic ammonia and/or nitrite levels, overcrowding, moving, rough handling, inadequate/innapropriate diet, temperature fluctuation, wrong pH or pH fluctuation, build up of dissolved organic compounds --- the list is practically endless.
the red streaking observed on the fins or red spots on the body are the result of haemorrhaging of internal organs and accumulation of released blood in more external tissues of the body such as fins. other symptoms which may occur as the disease progresses include ulcers.
you need to maintain your water quality and reduce/eliminate both ammonia and nitrite. there's little point in medicating these fish unless you eliminate the cause first. otherwise it just won't work.
you do not have a cycled filter and thus, the toxic nitrite levels. moreover, corydoras catfish are not hardy to these toxins and should never be insstalled in an uncycled tank. i believe you're seeing the results now.
having only one or two fish out of several contract the disease is not uncommon -- fish vary in their resistance to pathogens. it will not last. septicaemia is extremely infectious and the other fish will succumb soon. the result is always death.
Thanks so much!
I'll go get the meds tomorrow, and if it is the hemorrhagic septicemia, we'll see what happens.
Again, thanks!
Well, I guess I'm glad I didn't go to the store before I stopped at home after work today. The cory didn't make it through the night. Ugh.
