Molly Fungus? Cotton-like scales...

Okay, I looked in my tank today and one of the molly fry (5-6 months old) looked grotesque... Like a Freddy Kruger of my tank. It's scales had all kind of puffed out, almost like cauliflower ear... but scales.

I tried to take a picture but nothing showed up that would be of any help.

I just did a 50% water change and put the sick fish into a breeder net.

My API test kit is at home and I'm at school. I'll pick it up asap but I can't give you results.

Is this a fungus?

What I need to know is
a) what to do, meds? and
b) I don't have another tank available for isolation. Will this fish make my other fish sick if I leave it in the tank?

Does the fry look like it's pineconing? That sounds like dropsy. Maracyn-Two is a treatment for it, if so.

Yup, that sounds like dropsy, a fluid build-up inside the fish.. the bad news is it's contagious if any of that fluid touches other fish in the tank, so you need to isolate the sick fish as soon as possible.. until you can get a quarantine tank( a 5gal. is adequate.. no gravel or sand but maybe a rock or two to give the fish a sense of security), try using a container of some kind that you can run an airhose to as a temporary solution.

Wish I didn't have to tell you this too but dropsy is hard to cure, so be prepared for the worst.

Good luck...
