How can you tell that the meds are working??

Hi everybody,

My fish seem to have fin rot + fungus. I am treating them with a product called LIFEGUARD made by Jungle. It is supposed to take care of everything. I want to know how to tell that the fish are getting better. I noticed the disease early and so they are just as active and hungry as before. How can I know if the medicine worked? Also does anyone have any opinions on LIFEGUARD??

I have a 20g with 4 platies, 4 danios and 3 serpae tetras. Ammo/ nitrite is -ve. nitrate in the safe level.

I have never had any disease outbreak so I don't know much. Any suggestion will be much appreciated. Thanks.

The first response to any illness should be a step-up in partial water changes. Better water quality helps the fish's bodies fight off infection.
How many PPM are the nitrates?

I would also suggest getting vita-chem, if you can find it. The stuff helps keep nutrients in sick fish's bodies.

It took me 3 months to get rid of the fin rot my betta, Jasper came home from the store with. Another betta was fine in a week. It depends how bad the infection was that he had that brought on the fin rot.

Thanks for your replies. I don't know the ppm of nitrates cos i have the strips. I will look for the vitachem. How much water should I change and how often?

I would do a 50% daily. This is what i do for a hospital tank and works well.

I'd recommend the API master FW kit for testing, you'll get WAY more accurate results.

For finrot/fungus I'd recommend triple sulfa + rid-fungus. I've found that to be effective with our Betta. I've never used the Lifeguard product.
