The Heat

I have lost several of my tetras and I believe that it was due to my tank's temp.
It is at about 85F which I know is really high. I will be getting a new heater but could this be the problem?

Just a point to ponder... when treating for ick, my temp was 85+ and the tetras made it. Could be something else...

I think 85 would only (or anyway be much more likely to) kill a fish if it was a sudden change. Everything else in the tank is fine/normal? Did you test it recently?

Do you have aeration? At that warm of a temp, it might be a necessity for them. I'd keep them closer to 80 if possible.

I've gotta get a new heater. I have a 35g tank. Since they only had 30 and 40g heaters, I bought the 40g heater thinking it would last longer. I turned it all the way do wn and it is still at 85F. I decided to keep it because none of my fish seemed to mind. But my tets seem to be feeling the effects and they are all dying.

I do have l plenty of aeration.

What is the room temp? I'd turn the heater off and unplug it, replacing it asap.

I think that heater has to be broken to be doing that then.

whoaaa even turned all the way down it seems extreme to make it that warm with only a 5 gallon difference...how long has the heater been in there? I would take it out and keep the room as warm as possible until you can get another
