2 dead corys in 2 days, help!
hey everybody. i yesterday i found a dead cory in my 55. not sure what happened. i added some extra prime in case the dead fish gave off a lot of ammonia, and did a 50% water change. today, i see another dead cory! i hav 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and less than 10 ppm nitrate.
what could be causing these deaths?

you shouldnt of did a 50 gallon water change after losing a fish. in 55 gallon one dead cory shoudlnt of realy really produced thatmuch ammonia to harm the other fish unless it had the white mold growing around it but i have been missing fish for over a weak and find them wedged under rock. the 50 percent change might have stress the fish out and possibably will throw it into a mini cycle. cories can be sensitive to the water change might have stressed it out

Did you take those readings within 24 hours of a water change? If so, take them again after it's been at least 24 hours to get more 'settled' results. Did the corys show any signs of being bitten, redness, etc?

no the corys looked fine. and before and after the water changes, my nitrates were below 10. im starting to think that petsmart is selling me low quality fish, because i have this amazing LFS that ive never had a dead fish from (even with neons!), and almost all my petsmart fish hav died for no reason

Corys are like the canary in a mine. If the water has problems they are the first ones to suffer, that said, I would say a 50% change was the right thing to do. HOWEVER, when you do that, may I suggest to do a 25% change, then another 25% change.....This cuts down the stress....
Sorry, corys are one of my favorites! Were they relatively new to your tank? Don't give up on them, when they survive the first month, they make a super addition to your tank, and can be really long lived...They also do better in groups of 3-5 or more, so if you only had 2 THAT in itself could have caused some stress...
Good Luck

Maybe when you do find more corys, try adding them slowly...maybe 1 at a time, they might stress less that way. Just an idea to help you from losing more. I have 3 corys, and they are so funny.

Awww, what a cutie. I have 2 leopards and a panda. They are so cute, I can tell they just love each other too. My 3 get so silly/happy swimming all over they are a hoot to watch. Glad you're going to add them gradually. Keep an eye on you newbie, for a few days. Oh, they love shrimp pellets alot too!

Well, I wouldn't be quite so alarmed about 50% water changes. I do about 50% once per week, and they're all OK. What could possibly cause a mini-cycle is a massive change of filter medium and/or substrate.
Panda corys can be super sensitive to just about anything. I had 5 that were totally fine for weeks, then I lost them all to fungus one by one, a day at a time. I still dont' know what's happened, but my other corys (and betta) in there are perfectly fine.
