My bloodfin terta stomach is concaved

Hello, I have a few blood fin tertas and it seems they have a desease. I have seen this symptom many times in the years I have been keeping fish, both with mine friends and sometimes in stores. It looks like the fishes stomach is empty and slowly retracting into its body. Then it seems like the spine is starting to hunch. The fish appeared fine when bought but after months they are showing there sickness. I dont know what the name of there desease but if anyone knows can you let me know and any info on it would be great. They seem to be eating well so although the look starved and they are waisting away. thanks Rick

welcome to Fishlore.

It sounds like it might be a case of fish TB. Do you have a picture that you could post?

Classic case of TB. Unfortunately there's probably not much you can do for them. You could try treating with kanamycin but if they're already wasting it may not do much. It may be best to euthanize the fish to prevent him from suffering. But whatever you want to do, definately remove the fish from the tank immediately to prevent him from passing it on to the other fish. Just be careful since it is possible on rare occasions for a human to become infected with the pescine TB as a skin infection, so don't put your bare hand in the tank if you have any cuts.

TB can also cause other symptoms--basically anything that any other bacterial disease can cause, like finrot (but it won't go away with finrot meds), ulcers, etc, so be looking out for any fish showing suspicious symptoms and isolate them immediately. If you catch it early you may have a chance trying to treat it, if you are willing to try.

Well, the fish died before I could take a photo. Thanks for the info. I had seen it before but never knew what it was. I will let you know if any others come down with it. Thanks again

Make sure to remove any other sick fish immediately. The disease isn't super contagious but there's a high chance of passing it on if the infected fish dies in the tank. Sorry you lost the fish, unofortunately there's really nothing you can do when a fish starts wasting (I've tried...).

When we had a potential case of fish TB kill a betta, everything was destroyed. At the least, I would recommend sterilization and cleaning to the maximum that's possible.
