Goldfish died

Hi everybody..

I am Amol..staying in Mumbai.

I set up a new tank for my 5 years Son. I started with 3 fishes.. two gold fishes & one Angel..One as only one was available at store. 2 Died & one goldfish remained. Then I added one more goldfish, two red capped goldfishes & two Dollers. Soon one goldfish started developing black patches/lines on tail & fins. I purchased Blue liquid for his treatment. Set up one hospital tank & put him in that. For first day I observed that black lines are slowly disappearing. Second day I found that fish is not eating anything & staying most of the time upright & finding difficult to sweam.

Frightned, I put him back into the tank. For that day he was happy I guess as he was sweaming & enjoying with his friends. In the evening I found that he went to one corner & remained there for long time. Next Morning I found that He is again upright & remaining at surface. After some hours I lost him... We named him...Circuit...We lost Circuit...What may be the reason.
I have taken care of what beginer should take... Water chlorine levels... Water temperatures.. etc..

Regards

Welcome to Fishlore, first and foremost.

Secondly: Its a bad idea to keep goldfish (which are temperate water fish) with angelfish (which are tropical.)

Thirdly:

What size tank was this?
How often were you doing waterchanges?
... There should be NO chlorine in the water. You should always treat chlorinated water with a dechlorinator.
If you would get an API master test kit (I think that is what most of the people on this site recommend) let us know what the Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate levels are.
What temperature do you keep your tank?
Do you make sure not to have chemicals of any sort (including soaps, detergents, alcohol, cologne, perfume, etc) on your hands/arms before messing with the tank water?

Answering some of these questions will help us to assess what may have gone wrong, other than the tropical with temperate fish.

Have you cycled your tank? That could the reason why your fish are dying... You've got an odd mix of fish... As chief_waterchanger mentioned it's not a good idea to keep goldish (cold water fish) with tropical... It's also not a good idea to keep goldfish in a smaller tank... I'm not saying your tank is small because I have no idea. But if it is a smaller tank that could be another problem.

GOLDFISH case

Thanks for replying to my query. I answer some of your questions as below-

1. I have not cycled the tank. I was unaware of this. As a beginner I just went to shop I brought some fishes. The tank was already with me & gifted by a relative. I requested the shopkeeper to set up my tank. He came late in the night at 23.00 hrs & set it up. I collected few tips from him but he didn't tell me about cycling.

2. My tank is 3 ft X 1.5 ft

3. Now my three goldfishes have turned very naughty & they play whole day in the tank making it enjoyable moments for us. Sugegst me what kind of fishes I can add with them?

4. I change about 10-20% water every week. I dechlorinate it also.

5. I ensure that while putting hands in the tank they are clean. I keep my tank at room temperature. I do not monitor Nitrogen cycle & pH of the tank. Monitoring pH is very easy as one can do it with pH paper but it seems that nitrogen cycle monitoring is expensive. Initially I don't want to invest too much in this hobby. Once we get confidence then we can go further. What do you think?

Awaiting replies..

It is so hard to say what is best for you, but I would recommend getting a test kit. Here in the states the API Master Test kit for freshwater costs between $20 - $30. It is well worth it because you can do hundreds of tests, and that is the only way you will be able to assure safe water, to keep your fish healthy.

It appears your tank may be around 55 gallons, which is bare minimum for starting out with 3 gold fish. As they grow quite large, and are a messy fish, without any other fish you would have to upgrade to a larger tank in a few months.

As stated before you can't keep tropical fish (angels) with gold fish. They require different temperatures. Your tank can't have any other fish besides the three gold fish, it would be overcrowded.

When you get back to us with the results of your tests, I would be happy to give suggestions on what to do to keep your tank in tip top condition.

Results for,

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
Best of Luck.....

Sadly you have to be willing to put money into the fishkeeping hobby. It isn't much after the initial investment of tank and equipment, but there are still costs.

Even if you only got 100 tests out of the $30 test kit that is only: like 30 cents per test? But 200 would then half that to 15 cents per test, that isn't much, really.

I hope your tank does well, and I am glad you came to this good site for advice.
