Cory

Hi!

Recently put some fish in my tank.

3 corys
7 neons

One of the corys, since day 1, had been at the bottom of the tank, it has very rapid gill movement, and barely moves.

HE still hasnt died, but hasnt had a change in condition for 3 days.

Any idea what may be causing this? The other corys are absolutely fine, infact thriving i d say.

I guess its just a fish that couldnt cope with transit.

ALL water quality is fine, the tank is recently cycled and as I say , the other fish are loving it!

Its quite frustrating that I have to watch this fish die slowly over the space of a few days, i d love to help it.

Regards

PS the cory has no visible signs of damage or disease whatsoever

Where did you get the fish? A lot of times people who buy fish from chain stores, or even private stores that are more about money than the stock bring him diseased, low quality fish.

Every fish illness has one of two causes:

1) Something the person that had it before you did.
2) Something you are doing.

So if your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are good, and your water's hardness and pH is fine for those fish, and you've not added any chemicals to the tank that aren't supposed to be there or touched the water with chemicals on your hands, and are not overfeeding the tank, it could've been reason #1.

I would isolate the cory and do increased waterchanges on the isolated cory. I wouldn't use any chemicals until I knew what the problem was. See if the waterchanges help first, would be my suggestion.

Hi!

Thanks.

Yes the water level were good in the tank when I last checked, and as I say, all the other fish are more than happy, including 2 other corys which are really thriving well.

I have tried to do 2 waterchanges now, both of about 35%, and no change. I thought there may be lack of oxygen in the tank, so added an airstone, but that did nothing so removed it. The tank is heavily planted anyway.

The shop has a reputation for being very good quality, but i guess its inevitable that there may be the odd unhealthy fish. I wasnt at the store when I chose him (phoned up and asked them to get them ready) so maybe he just scooped out one that looked almost dead because he knew I wouldnt see it!

Again unlikely.

Its so annoying that this fish doesnt show anything external abnormalities, its like hes dying for no reason!

Does he stay in the one spot all the time? Does he eat? The corys do find an airstone fun usually, so it wouldn't hurt if you wanted to leave it in.

Are you using a liquid testing kit and getting 0 for ammonia, 0 for nitrites and under 20 for nitrates? Corys can be pretty sensitive to water conditions and this one may just not be as strong as the others. Are his gills red or purple?

I have found corys can be touchy. Usually if they survive the first week, you are home free.....but I have had losses and the fish didn't exhibit any outward signs of being sick, which tells me that the acclimation has to be really slow. Now that this fish is stressed he may not pull out, but you can try cutting the light for a day or two, and I would keep up those water changes.
You can not assume the water conditions are right. I notice you are not posting the readings. You said your tank is heavily planted. Are you using CO2? This could cause a drop in oxygen. I agree with Dave you should leave the airstone in. Hope he pulls through!
