Fin Rot!

My Oranda is having Fin Rot Problem. It just stays still in the middle of the tank with its tails downward. Its fins are torn with white lining. I am just worried. Any Simple Solution? I have always avoided medication for my fish!

If possible isolate the fish, fin rot is very contagious. Good news is that it's easy to treat and the fish usually survives. Best treatments without medicine is water changes and addition of aquarium salt. Best solution with medicine is antibiotics. Fin rot occurs when the fish is stressed for some reason. The most common cause is poor water quality. Overcrowding the tank, feeding outdated food or overfeeding, and moving or handling the fish can also cause stress leading to fin rot. Make sure to check PH and ammonia levels. Good luck he should be fine if treated swiftly enough.

How big is the tank? How many and what kind of fish? How long has it been set up/did you cycle it? What are the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings? How often do you do pwc's and how much do you change?

My medicated (Hospital) tank is occupied already. So I can't isolate the fish. My tank is 85gl with 18 goldfish in it. I am thinking of returning couple of goldfish back to LFS. How many should i return? I still don't want to use medicene, so i think i should use salt. Now pls tell me what to do in detail with salt treatment, I mean the process? How should i start!

Its winter time right now over here, thats why i haven't done partial water change since last few months i guess. I have never used a testing kit cause i can't find one in my LFS. Is there any way i can maintain my water quality without test kit? Currently in my 85gl tank, I have 2 shubunkins, 3 pearl scale, 3 fan tails, 1 viel tail, 1 bubble head, 3 lion head, 1 black moore, 2 sutchi shark, 2 oranda. I am confused which ones to return

You don't need to necessarily return fish, but goldfish are just about the dirtiest fish going, so frequent water changes is a necessity. They create a lot of ammonia which could be a reason why your fish has fin rot. For the aquarium salt, just do a water change and pour some of the salt into the tank, the box will have instructions for you on how much to put in. Water changes, bio-boost liquid drops, water conditioner, and aquarium salt should maintain a pretty good water quality. Also be sure to change the filter cartridges every so often.

Unfortunately, that tank is very overstocked. 7 goldies would be better for a tank that size. They're big waste producers and the general guideline with goldies is 20g for the 1st one and 10g for each additional, minimum.

I would recommend ordering an API Master Freshwater Kit to test your water:
(I'm linking to DFS & PetMountain, our 2 favorite online stores):
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113074
http://www.petmountain.com/product/t...-test-kit.html

I would also recommend Prime for treating your tap water. It will not only take care of chlorine, chloramines & heavy metals but it helps build slime coating and helps protect the fish some from nitrogen-based toxins (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates):
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...Ntt=prime&Np=1
http://www.petmountain.com/product/w...nditioner.html

To treat finrot, we use 2 courses Triple-Sulfa and use Rid-Fungus at the same time since the cause can be fungal or bacteria in origin:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...e%20sulfa&Np=1
http://www.petmountain.com/product/m...fa-powder.html

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...%2Dfungus&Np=1
http://www.petmountain.com/product/m...id-fungus.html

Vitachem and Fish Protector help fins heal:

http://www.petmountain.com/product/w...reshwater.html

<DFS doesn't carry fish protector>
http://www.petmountain.com/search/0/...protector&g=Go

I would recommend 25% partial water changes weekly and would highly advise against aquarium salt treatment for finrot.

Sounds like must be overstocked, sorry I know nothing of goldfish besides your dirtiness. If that's overstocked like cobettacouple said will definately need to return some, overstocked + dirty fish = bad water ;(
