First of all, what size tank do you have? What are your water readings? How many fish do you have/what types?
You've quite a lot of fish there and some of them grow to a pretty big size. And you say you have a struggle with nitrates that could be from over stocking/feeding. Blowing up can be from many things, over feeding and wrong ingredients in fishfood are 2 things which come to mind at the moment. It could be disease too.

What Algae treatment are you using? Unfortunately, many of them can have lethal effects on fish and we almost lost both of our tanks when we were a month into fishkeeping because of an anti-algae product almost killing them all.
