Just how contagious...

are things like gill parasites, whirrling* disease, flukes... I'm worried because 2 fish died in my 30g this week from unknown causes. The rest seem fine, but i'm worried.

They're all pretty contagious. Strange, I've been having problems with those smae diseases lately. You don't hear about flukes or whirling disease that often, but I've been seeing it a lot in new fish and at stores (that I don't buy fish from)...I wonder why?

Could be that one particular distributor has a rampant infection problem, and the stores in question all get their fish from the that distributor.

Well my Petsmart always has fish carrying gill flukes and whirling disease as well as tuberculosis (along with the everyday ich and finrot). I'm not sure about Petco. I've gotten gill flukes from both of my normally reliable lfs's.

My Petsmart specialty is fungus and finrot.

I've only seen ick a few times (very light cases) at my LFS... he takes amazing care of all his fish. But..... I did have a pleco I bought from petcetera in there for a while now that I think about it grrr! I hope the rest of the fish arn't doomed.

Plecos can be pretty tough and if he's been in there a while, he's as safe as any of them.
