dwarf gourami help

hey guys. my dwarf gourami has been in my tank and happy for 4 months, and has breeded with his mate multiple times. over the last 2 weeks, ive seen his on his side on the bottom of the tank for a few hours, but then later hes swimming around normally again! 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 5 nitrate if that helps. im thinking swim bladder problems, but would like ur suggestions

what should i do to help him?

thanks, and happy holidays!

it does sound like it could be swim bladder problems. It might be internal parasites maybe - does he have white/clear poop?

I'd recommend changing foods immediately if you haven't gotten that container very recently. Omega One would be a good brand to use. how long ago did you get that container of food? If it's been a little bit, I'd google the fish food recall and see if the food you've been using is part of that recall.

yea.. i really think it's internal parasites or bacteria.. it's a guess though as i'm not 100% certain of that.

I think I saw white poop (thin string type thing hanging from his underside) on my Gourami also -- does that mean internal parasites? If so, what do you do to help them?

Get to your LFS and get some medicine for parasites, and if you have carbon in the filter, be sure to remove it while treating. Then you'll need to do water changes after treatment.

Parasite Clear would be one to start with, especially if you have other fish in the tank.

I don't even know if he has anything - just happened to see a white string on him once. What are the symptoms?

Other symptoms include: inactivity, loss of appetite, excess mucus or film on body, visible spots or worms, rapid breathing, scratching.

Hi all. I treated the water with the anti parasite granules and also followed the feeding schedule for the anti parasite food (3 consecutive days for 4 weeks) and it seems to have worked; I haven't seen any threadlike, clear poop on my Dwarf Gourami. Yay!

Glad to hear that the treatment was successful.
