First time w/ ich..please HELP!! I have had my tank(12 g) for over 2 months. It has been properly cycled, I use the API test kit, water is perfect, I have glowlite tetras and the Von river(??) tetras(the little orange ones) I test my water twice a week, and is always great. I have not added any new fish in over two weks. How does ICH appear?? There have been no major changes. This morning I noticed about half the fish had white dots. Two of the smaller ones had more. It looks like I caught it early cause I didnt spot it yest. I dont think the salt is a good idea cause tetras are soft water..and the article I read said they may be to sensitive or something. I Increased the temp so its on its way to 82. SHould I just buy the commercial ich treatment? Puzzled as to how ich appeared...I hate ich...the fish look uncomfortable

I have a lot of trust in raising the temperature. You could raise it to 84'f and wait.

Would you suggest adding any ich treatment med from the LFS? I dont like chemicals, so If it could be treated w/out...w/ just an increase in temp that would be great. But if medication is necessary Ill go get some.

| raise the temp, use medication and salt and keep it in darkness
this should keep it from spreading and keep the fish safe |

I found I had ich among my clown loaches after I got back from holiday in the summer. I raised the temp to 84f and did small water changes every day to get rid of the dead parasites in the water (as well as the regular changes I do anyway). It went in about a week, with no chemicals.

if you want to do more than use the warmer water temp to get rid of the ich, that Ich-Attack is great. It's organic and herbal and safe for all of your fish plus it won't mess up your cycle. |

well...It appears to be clearing up some! definetly has not spread. Should I still get med...or wait another day? The increase in temps most of been a possitive thing. Plus I did a small water change.

Yeah Just did a samll water change, it has definetly has made an improvement. The ones that had it have less dots, and the other ones that didnt have any yest, dont have today. Question...Do I have to keep the temps up for 2 weeks?

Yes, you have to keep the temps up, to make sure everything is dead. Ich gets in the gills, and you may not see the spots, this is why it can come in on fish without you even knowing they have it.

Well I ended up buying some treatment. There were a few fish that I spotted a couple dots. SOme do not have any so it appears the temps have helped. There have been no signs of the ich progressing except for one poor little fish!!! Why does he have all the ich? I feel so bad for him. The others appear to be doing better, where as this guy is same if not worst? I only did treatment yest. I add more tonight at 6pm for the second treatment. About how many treatments usually does it

You shouldn't need to use medication for ICH. The increase in temp to 85 should be fine, but it needs to stay at that temp for 14 days otherwise the parasite will continue to thrive and it will not die. Even if you see that the spots are gone you still need to keep it at that temp cuz the ich can come back if you don't and then you 'll have to start all over again. Natalie

I planned to just use the temps, but after 2 days it appeared worst on one fish, so I thought Id take a little more aggresive approach. After the second treatment it appears to be working.

Well it appears to be 90% gone...so should I do 3 more days or so of medicine? I plan to leave the temps at 83 until next weekend. Next sat will be 2 weeks.

Just so you know, over the course of 10 days I got my temp up to 90* kept it that way for 2 weeks, my kribensis and yo yo loaches were fine, they darkened up in color a bit but it got rid of the ick. I would suggest raising the temp a degree everyday and just make sure you watch how your fish tolerate it very carefully.

for those fish, the current temp is probably the max. I'd just keep it up until after the 2 weeks are over, then consider them under observation for a while.

Yeah, I did not want to take it any higher. There is one fish w/ one dot left. I will medicate one more time tonight, then leave at 83 for 1 more week. But everything is looking great!
