Sick or pregnant ???

Hi Everyone,

I have 6 Cherry Barbs (3 males + 3 females). One of my female Cherry Barbs has gotten very fat lately. I don't know what to think of it. She must be either pregnant or sick. No idea which one condition it is. What do you think folks?

* Just for the record: She eats normally (feeding 2 x a day, small amounts), her coloration is very good, and her swimming is balanced. She's in a 75 gallon tank, of which the parameters are as follows: 7.8 pH, 5 PPM nitrate, 0 nitrite, and 0 ammonia.

Here are her pictures. The first picture also has another female Cherry Barb in the background + one male to the left. This way, you can see that the other female is quite slim, compared to the fat one.

Hmm, I am still worried because I once had a very fat neon tetra too, and I thought maybe it was pregnant, but in fact it was very sick and died soon thereafter.

Hi Isabella, I have kept Cherry Barbs (lovely fish aren't they!) and my females often looked like that when egg laden - my opinion is she is pregnant and will soon release her eggs. Lucky you!!

She looks pregnant to me...can you see the hole (ahem) where the eggs come out? One of my neons looks pregnant too, the males have been shimmying at her a lo the past few days.

Whew ... certainly better pregnant than sick! Although what am I going to do with the babies? They'll be either sucked into the filter or eaten by other fish Besides, I don't know anything about breeding and raising Cherry Barbs. But anyway, thanks. Like I said, better pregnant than sick.

I don't know easy it is to breed cherry barbs...but I imagine if they do lay eggs...the other fish will eat them.
