Found my 2 platies dead.

I found my 2 platies dead today. They'd been in the tank for only a week and they looked normal yesterday.

There are 2 weird things going on in my tank: one of the blackskirt tetras is getting all red and on its dorso it has what looks like a white scratch. The other 6 tetras look normal. The other thing is that all 7 tetras are fighting each other. They are not schooling anymore.
The ammonia is 0, the nitrates are finally 20.
I don't find an explanation.
Could it be that the tetra infected the other 2 platies? What do I do with that red tetra? I don't have a quarantine tank.
I have 2 big angelfish that I've noticed are getting a little territorial. Can they kill the others?
What is methylene blue used for?

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

Explaination is as follows:

Your hyperlink in your signature says it is a 40g tank.........

2 goldfish get to 8-10inches a piece and need atleast the 40g to themselves
2 angelfish need atleast 20g for themselves
2 bala sharks get to 1ft a piece
tetras are smaller fish that will be harassed by the larger fish (white scratch is probably a battlewound)
the zebra danio need to be in schools of 5-6 or more
the pleco I hope is not a common, it gets to 1ft and needs atleast a 55g tank

So basically you have a grossly overpopulated tank.

The overpopulation of the tank (I am assuming based on your signature and what it says is in the tank) is the root of all of your problems. The 'white scratch' is probably a wound that is trying to heal. The 'reddness' is probably infected wounds. The angelfish most certainly can kill anything their size and smaller, without too much trouble, as can most fish. Methylene blue is used to treat infections.

The territorial issues stem back, yet again, to the overpopulation of the tank.

In the wild if a fish gets territorial and harasses another the weaker of the two goes elsewhere, if they are stuck in a glass box they don't have that option available to them. I would suggest either getting more tanks or selling/returning whatever fish you can.

No no!
What I have right now is what it says in my signature:
7 blackskirt tetras
2 angelfish
1 dwarf gourami
2 zebra danios
1 platies

I returned the goldfish, the sharks, the pleco a few weeks ago.

Another thing, I noticed just now that one of the angels is developing a bright red spot from its mouth to one of its gills.

Could I use methylene blue to treat that tetra? Would it affect the other fish? Does it affect the anacharis plant?

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

no, it won't affect the plant. I suggest trying 50% daily waterchanges. A difference should be noticed within a week's time. If that doesn't work make sure to post again.

(Sorry to assume, but didn't see a tank size without clicking the hyperlink. You did awesome with taking back enough to get the stock to a normal level! )

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

http://www.klsnet.com/files/fishchart.htm - check this page for help with matching a disease to symptoms since you can look at the affected fish.

it could be reaction to water chemistry issues.. i'm not sure i can hazard a guess at the root cause right now without pics, other than water chemistry being off some - i get the feeling it could be a little more, but not sure what. you might have to put your plant in a container of tank water while treating with meds, i'm not sure on that one.

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

Thanks for your responses.

What I did, since I don't have a quarantine tank, I took the tetra and the angel to the LFS. They say it could be parasites and are going to treat them. I'll pick them up in 3 days.

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

Just went to the LFS. The angel died
The tetra is fine.

Should I worry that the other fishes in my tank could be sick? Do I need to do something? All the fish look great.

I want to buy 2 small corys but not before it's safe to get new inhabitants.

Re: Found my 2 platies dead.

without knowing the problem for certain, i think the best thing to do is perhaps wait 3 weeks and see if anything comes up. If not, then I think it would be safe to consider the other fish ok and safe to add fish to the tank.
