another death

morning all well we discovered one of our new baby pandas dead this morning really upset we finally find someone that stocks them and lose one.
For some reason all our fish shops in the area are struggling to get pandas and the ones they are getting they have put up the price and they really dont look great !!our favorite store actually refused to sell theirs which they had in quarantine for2 weeks and said they still were not happy to sell them, so some stores are great and responsible.
Anyway the other store sold us 4 they look a bit raggy i cant explain really but the tiny one was dead today i thought at first they may have fin rot so i treated them yesterday so il just have to watch and wait.

You bought fish that looked a little raggy? Usually this is not indicative of good health.

Panda cories IME are sensitive fish that tend to ship poorly and stress easily. That first store you mentioned was right to hold them for a minimum of 2 weeks... I'd suggest shopping there in the future. Regardless, pandas don't do well in newer tanks, even if you are cycled. It's probably best to wait a few months to let your tank mature before buying any new ones. JMHO.

ok thanks, our original 3 are pretty big now new ones very active but little one which died wed not seen it for a couple of days.we usually always get our stock from the good one but had wanted more pandas for so long we bought them elsewhere.
Guess that will teach us,their are no missing fins or signs of fungus just their top fins look uneven like raggy !!

That's too bad about the little one. Just do the best you can with the ones you have, and let the tank mature and settle down for a while IMO. Then you should be good to try out a few new pandas.

I'm sorry, I know how much you love your Pandas...

I agree with Harpua that they are sensitive fish, but when I was a newbie (well, more of a newbie than I am now!) and didn't know much, I added my leopard cories after ONLY a month, and they are still with me now, they are very naughty, chasing each other, playing etc. I guess I got lucky, but mine's were still small and have grown all big now, it's been great to see (I liked them so much I got pandas for my bigger tank haha, which I love watching just as much!)

I'm sorry for your loss and can understand wanting a panda so badly as to buy it elsewhere I love those little guys and wish you best on the rest of them.

Oh no, that's not good, it may just be weak stock. It sounds like the ones you found were not the best, and maybe you were right. I jusy hope that what they have is not catching. Keep an eye on your older pandas, but honestly, sounds like you got a bad bunch

That's so sad. Hopefully they don't have anything the others can catch. I once had several guppies wiped out like that because at the time I didn't have a quarantine tank.
With any luck that'll be the last of the deaths though and the remaining one will settle in and all will be well.

The missing one may be dead and thus will cause your ammonia/nitrite to rise. Sorry about your problems.

Sorry to hear about your panda losses, I too, have pandas and love them, but they are indeed sensitive little fish. Currently I have two new ones in my tank, bringing my total count up to three.
How long has your tank been established for? Could the ammonia spike be due to the addition of your new pandas? A bit of overfeeding or leftover food that no one found? Were you able to take out the perished ones right away? What doesn't effect some fish might be lethal to weak ones. I have also gone through some mysterious panda deaths and sometimes I am thinking it is just in their genes (you may find stronger and weaker batches of these little guys)
I am starting to think that the best chances for pandas are in a well established tank with no sudden changes in temperature and parameters. Also I am trying to keep at least 3 of them, (currently number four is newly purchased and in the Q tank) in an understocked tank.

Good luck to you with your pandas!

Sorry to hear about your lost. I use to have 3 cories but they weren't pandas. I now have one left and all of these struggles I have in my tank, the last cory is still living. The other 2 died last year. One was a mystery death and the other one was harassed from the danios I used to have.

But anyway.. Hope you will get really strong ones soon. What tank size is this though.

Sorry that you lost the four pandas, poor little guys. Don't get discouraged, clearly there may have been something in their genetics that they were a weak batch. Pandas are pretty sensitive it seems. Hope that your 3 other ones do well, sounds like since they are bigger they will have a better survival rate.

That is frustrating for sure! Where did you buy the original pandas? Maybe you should wait until they have more, or, just be content to have the 3 in your tank. Did you want to get more cories? The bronze ones are a bit bigger, but don't seem to be as sensitive, maybe you could get three of those. They are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length.
