One eyed fishes - why?

Hello.

Am not sure where to post this. My fish are losing their eyes !

Tank size 180L. No issues with water quality. Set up for over 12 months.

Inhabitants;
Guppies, platys, 6 rummy noses, 1 dwarf honey guarami, 1 angel fish, 1 lampeye, 4 neon tetra.... 1 botia/ pakistani loach .

My mystery is this....
2 platys, 1 guppie, 1 Lampeye, 1 Rummy nose, 2 neon tetras (both died)

Have all lost an eye over the past 2 months.

The angel is congenitally one eyed which is why he is in this tank - he was bullied and has been in the tank for almost a year.

The rummy nose was the first, the guppie the last to be discovered with an eye missing. All except the two tetras have survived.

I can find NOTHING sharp in the tank, nothing to account for this....

No new fish, no ornaments for 6 months at least except some home grown baby guppies and platys who were taken out and then returned when they were big enough not to be eaten.

The loach is approx 5 inches long and hasnt grown since he was bought ( an early mistake, if I knew now etc). He is unaggressive but the only obvious baddie in the tank. If he is attacking the smaller fish then why just remove an eye They are all unafraid of him.

Any ideas? I am confused and worried, a tank of one eyed fish isnt ideal.

Whoa...that is scary weird. The only thing that I think of is that someone in there is the aggressor... just because you don't see it doesn't mean it is not happening. What goes on in a fish tank, at night, could be a different story than during the day.Do you have a Qtank to use? I would isolate the loach, to me he is the unknown in this equation, although I believe that angels can be aggressive also. I wouldn't take him off the suspect list, either.
Unless there is some strange eye-eating disease out there! someone in that tank is not playing nice. I just can't see (pardon the bad play on words) it being the platies, guppies or the honey, I have those fish and they are not that mean.

I sure hope someone with more experience has something to say on this, I feel really bad for you and your fish.

I think I agree with you.

Problem is I dont know where to put him.

Perhaps he can go play with the cichlids lol. He cant go in tank 1 with the clown loaches as there are small fish in there, not in tank 2 there is no room, tank 3 has rosy barbs, odessa barbs and a pair of kribensis.... maybe in there although the Kribs will NOT like it at all...

I doubt its the angel, he has one eye (he was like that when i got him) and he is too slow to get the faster fish....

Humm.

Just for the record the Lampeye has died

I agree its bizarre.

I would not of thought it to be your yo-yo loach, they are too happy. As far as putting it in with your kribs and barbs that would not be a problem. I have 1 in with kribs, barbs yellow labs etc, and he gets on fine with them. Mine even schools with the barbs( i think he has an identity problem LOL). Good luck

My Danio lost his eye but I don't know what could be causing this problem?

I saw the yoyo loach yesterday actively chasing the angel fish, he was up at the top of the tank which is unusual, he was 'nipping' at the angel's head and side, not his fins as i might have expected. I wonder if he does this to the fishes when they are asleep and he is awake in the night?

This tank has been sad really. I started with small fish, including much loved dwarf honey, robin, blue guaramis and have lost all my dwarf guarami's except one female and I am fairly sure it was a viral problem that just affected them. It seems to be a problem in guernsey, iridovirus i think. My water is fine, my rummy noses thrive as do the guppies and the tetras....

I'm sorry about all this Helene, I hope you solve the problem soon, it is a bit of a mystery. I'll be watching to see how this develops.

I tried putting a betta in a community tank and it attacked a black skirt tetra that lost an eye in the exchange. Remarkably it lived for two years after with no problem.

My one eyed rummy nose has lived approx 7 months so far and seems oblivious that he has a problem.

BTW that is a beautiful picture and fish above.

Although the loach will be social with your other fish removing their eyes is not a loach habit. Loaches need to be in a group of three or more as they like a group of their own kind to be with.
I'm so sorry your having these problems. Any sign of disease that may have caused their eyes to deteriorate?

Hello Butterfly,
No diseases. the only problem was the original one with the dwarf guaramis but the last death was several months ago and only affected the dwarfs.

The loach was as I said an early mistake, the tank is not big enough to get him some friends. I also bought 3 clown loaches and they live in my 400L tank. Would the yoyo (i am assuming that is the 'new' name for the pakistani loach, whic was sold to me as an Angelicus loach....) coexist with the clowns?? He did start off in a larger tank but was aggressive towards my Garra panda loaches so I moved him.

Thanks

The Yoyo http://www.loaches.com/species-index/botia-almorhae will be fine with the clowns. Maybe in the bigger tank he can have friends Never had the be aggressive, rambunctious yes but not aggressive

Thank you for the link.

Arent they gorgeous fishes? I might try him with the clowns IF I can ever find another one (or 2 or 3) in the fish shop, not easy to get here. My clowns are much loved, they are so entertaining, happy fish.

Actually what I need are another 2 or 3 tanks, bigger bigger ones.....I am moving house this year and the nice people from the Aquarium have offered to build me a tank .... this MTS is expensive lol.

Thanks again.
