angel fish

Hi,

I listed myself as a begineer because this is my first aquarium setup since I moved to the USA. In my teens in India, I had a similar size aquarium with blue gouramis and angelfish (along with some guppys and zebra). I had the gouramis and angelfish lay eggs, hatch them etc.

Now for the question, I have a 20 gallon aquarium I am cycling. I added 3 zebras and 2 clud fishes to help cycling. Eventually I want to get atleast a couple of angelfish. Would 20 gallon be OK for just 2 angel fish?

Thanks,
RG

Welcome to FishLore!

I'm not real knowledgable about Angelfish, other than to know that they are beautiful, so I really can't answer your question.

Since you are cycling with fish, I wanted to make sure (for the sake of your fish) that you are aware of the most humane method. When cycling with fish it is best to do daily water changes of about 50% using a water conditioner called "Prime". The "Prime" will detox the ammonia and nitrites for 24 hours at which point you would be doing another water change. You would keep this up until the tank is fully cycled.

Sadly, I didn't know about this when I cycled my 36 gallon tank, and killed two Zebra Danio's and severly shortened the life of two others.

John has you covered on cycling.
A 20 would be great for a single pair of Angels.

My understanding is that angels do best in a tank that is at least 17 inches tall. Do you know the dimensions of your tank?

I was told by a breeder that minimum for one angle was 20 gallons and then ten gallons for each additional. Also he stated a twenty high was better then a twenty long as these fish can get pretty "tall" with there fins. There are a lot of angel fish people in the angel fish section of this forum that could help you out.

Right, I was also under the impression that a 20 tall would be good, but that a regular 20 is too short. But I know people here have successfully kept 2 in a 20 high.

My tank (30 long) is too short.
