My tank is a brown mess!

My tank is covered in this hairlike brown sludge that really has left me scratching my head . I have had this problem ever since i changed the substrate to sand in my 55g last summer. It doesn't appear to be diatoms unless there are different kinds? Its not a dark brown color, but the same color as the sand. Its like the sand is forming hairlike strands and covering my tank. Has anyone ever had this happen? I made the mistake of using play sand from Lowes, and i think i need to switch it out for a heavier type of sand because maintenance is such a pain. Simply stirring the sand creates a cloudy mess for my fish. I was hoping someone could tell me whats going on in my tank? I will post a pic if necessary.

how well did you rinse the sand riley, or did you just drop it in the tank and add water?? it contains a fair amount of clay and can be quite dirty (your brown mess). as long as you take the time to thoroughly rinse the sand it makes a good substrate.

I second washing the sand really well. I wash each 20 lbs for an hour. That may be overkill, but I don't have any issues with cloudiness when I change substrates.

Sounds like hair algae? What's your feeding schedule like?

I rinsed it well in a bucket of water twice (until the water ran clear) as well as boiled it to sterilize. My water isn't cloudy, there is just this sludge on everything and it didn't start out that way either, it just formed over time. It's not affecting any of the inhabitants, just more of an eyesore. I would think that if it was clay that six months of water changes and vacuuming would have eventually cleared it up which is why i am baffled.

edit: The cloudiness i was referring to is from when i do water changes. The particles are so small that they take forever to sink back down to the bottom of the tank. My parameters are normal, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates .5 and my pH is 7.6. I feed twice a day flakes in the morning, a couple sinking pellets at night with the occasional veggie treat. lights are mostly off and if they are on its for about 4 hours tops.

Forgot to add, i have used sand in my tanks in the past although not for a tank as large as a 55g. Because of the size of my tank i went for the cheaper play sand so i could get more, where in the others i had eco complete and desert sand, but i never had this sludge in my tank.

I don't really know much about algae - it's one of the many plants I can't grow I use a UV filter on one of my tanks, which gets direct sunlight, and don't have ANY algae of any kind. Persmart sells a couple for less than 100, I think.

I always refer to this site when I want to identify algae. http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_...ater_algae.php

Why it showed up and how you curb it depends on what kind you have, really. See if you can't figure out what type it is, then go from there.
