fish on the road....

So my question is: How long can your fish survive in the bag from the store? If I decide to get some guppies or maybe a blue tuxedo platy, it will have to be bought in the city, a bit under 2hrs drive away. Could I put the bag in a cooler, pack the sides to keep it steady with a hand warmer pack nearby to keep the water warm? Or would ammonia build up too much in the bag? I have a Q tank still set to go at home, so the new babies would go in there. Or should I wait until summer for this kind of a move (obviously, though, the car is warm) Or just try to stock what the LFS in town has. The shop in the city is huge, has such an amazing stock, it would be nice to buy one or two from there. But I will listen to advice!

You should be fine doing it the way you described.

I use to ride with my brother he would buy fish in San Diego and drive them to San Francisco. If packed properly they will last a long time. Think about fish that are shipped....

At the store I work at, I place my order on say Monday. The fish are bagged somewhere between 4 and 8pm, sit overnight bagged in foam boxes, and then delivered to my store at about 10AM the next day...of course they use O2 but they aren't kept anywhere special, just room temperature. This is all tropical, cold, and salt water. So I think your fish will definitely be fine..just don't tempt yourself to be constantly looking at the bags. You could probably just pack them in a lunch box, and if you are really worried you could use a few hand warmers if there is a compartment in the lunch box, but I wouldn't put one directly next to the bags. It takes longer to cool down water than to heat it up.

Thanks all for the answers. Lucy-thanks for the reminder regarding the search feature, sometimes I just get so caught up in wanting an answer I forget to use that first rather than wasting peoples time
