Hello everyone, my name is Rob and i recently got a 5g tank. i know its small but the only fish i have ever umm "kept" have been goldfish that i would win at the local city fair lol, sooo i decided to start small. I got it roughly a week ago and i already want a bigger one. As of right now i have a Male betta (Blue), 2 Red Eye Tetras, and 2 Black Mollies. I am happy to say that they get along just fine although the tetras have nipped my Betta once or twice, maybe i need some more so they can stop? idk im here to learn from you guys that have a ton more experience, thanks and Happy New Year to all.

Hi Rob welcome to FishLore
Tetras are schooling fish. Adding enough for a proper school usually helps.
However, the 5g is only big enough for the betta.
Bettas don't usually make good community fish,
Imo, you should seperate them before they do some serious damage to your betta.
I'd suggest getting a 20g tank, upping the number of tetras to try and reduce aggression and
Or, you could return the mollys, get more tetras and put them in a 10g.

Best of luck!

Hello Rob and Welcome to Fishlore!
Lucy has given good advice, and that your tank is overstocked, so if you get a 20-25 gallon like she says you can put 6 Red Eye Tetras, 2 Mollys and a Betta (If you say they can work out well) Have Fun with the Fish Hobby!

Red eye tetras are boisterous fin nippers that will likely shred a betta to pieces. The betta belongs by itself or with peaceful tank mates.

Welcome to Fishlore Rob.

Good advice above from Lucy, & Harpua is right that Bettas really belong by themselves. Usually Fighters either get thier fins nipped at & get stressed or sick or the Fighter will do the nipping & end up killing whatever is in the tank with them. your tank really is overstocked so if you can afford to get a larger tank for your Mollies & Red-eyes, it would be a good idea. Let's you get more fish to
