Rams!

Ok, so ive recently decided for my (currently empty) 30 gallon tank, that i want two rams to be the focus, with that i plan on having about six corys (not sure on specific ones yet) but i also want mid level schooling fish, ive been told tetras are to timid for rams, and someone suggested semi-aggressive fish, would tiger barbs work? i need some suggestions people? 2 rams, 6 corys and 6 or 8 *insert compatible schooling fish here*

thanks

Tetras tend to do quite well with rams IME, and whether you're planning for GBRs or Bolivians there are many species of tetras that would be a great choice. I'd avoid tiger barbs and some of the more boisterous tetras like black skirts, Buenos Aires, etc.

omg! i guess thats what i get for going to yahoo answers instead of here *newb mistake* hahaha so this was my ORIGINAL plan

2 angels
2 rams
8 xrays
6 corys

i thought that was too much
and was told that the angels and rams would tussel.

now, can i get some hardy FL opinion on that setup?

and i think It was the blue really colorful one

Yeah that list seems like a lot for a 30g, at least as adults. And those 30g are awfully shallow for an adult Angelfish. However Rams and Corys would love it . My Angelfish (single) and Rams did not fight in the 29g they shared, but the Angel was only in there until he reached about 3".

I would not try a pair of Angelfish in there even if you thought they would fit. If they didn't pair up one would likely kill the other...if they did pair up, they would likely take out the other fish in the tank. Neither a good outcome!

For what it's worth I had a pair of adult Rams living with Neon Tetras and Rosy Tetras...two of the smaller, passive species of tetra...and they were great together. A more aggressive schooling fish like a Tiger Barb would most likely really stress out and possibly harm Rams, based on my observations. Anecdotal but there it is

Good luck!

I definitely would not try for a pair of angels; I just think the tank is too small given what other fish you're planning to keep. I think you could keep a single angel without much issue, and still have room for all the other fish you listed. Pristellas (x-ray) are an excellent choice in terms of compatibility with the angel and rams.

In terms of aggression, of course every fish is an individual, but I'd say it's unlikely that your angel and rams would pay much attention to each other at all. I like your stock list a lot (with only one angel), and kudos to you for asking BEFORE you purchase... I wish I had done the same when I started out!

That is a GREAT set up. The one thing that you need to check is you pH and hardness. If you have soft water with a neutral mid-low PH then normal rams will work. But if you have something like a 7.8 or 7.6 Ph, I would go with Bolivians. They are a little more tolerant of higher Ph. All of the other fish should do fine with most PH levels if it stable.
You might also want to consider one or two less corrys and one or two less X-rays, just to keep stocking low. If you get juvenile angles and juvenile rams, then they should just grow up together.
Pick some smaller corrys. Something like the Juili corrys are small or some other form of corrys.
Other wise I think that you have a great set up. Actually I was thinking of having something like yours after I try and renovate my 29 gallon this weekend. 2 angels 3 Bolivians and some schooling fish. I also will have 5 corrys.
Hope this Helps

Hi, I've had neons, 2 Bolivian rams, and Kuhli Loaches together in a 20g with good results. Cories would be awesome though.

So i was wondering this, ive got a betta in one of those ghetto 1g tanks. I dont think he digs it in there and was thinking about throwing him in the big tank with the other guys. I know bettas wont rough up the corys, but what about the other fish? Im thinking about putting him in there instead of the angel so its not over stocked. Any advice? Also, im thinking about doing fishless cycling. Can someone give me advice, tips, experiences. Thanks!

IME with GBR's a very well established tank is a must. They are especially sensitive to their water parameters. Bolivians are a better choice for a newer setup.
Your Betta may get his fins niped~a lot~personally I wouldn't.
