Good or bad idea?

So I have my 29g sitting atop a metal stand on a carpeted floor. From the beginning I did not like the shaking of the water every time someone passes by and I realized I was stupid not to take it back to the store when I had my first doubt. Now I'm thinking more and more to buy a wooden stand and give the tank more stability. But I already have fish and plants in.

Question is, how much water you think I have to take out to be able to move the tank from one stand to another and how will that affect my fish and plants? I am thinking it would be very hard to catch all of my little fish since they are v fast and I'm still a beginner in the net handling.

So should I do it or not?

You'll want to take out most of the water. The tank will be heavy enough with wet gravel. You compromise the seams if you move it with water.
If you left the fish in, they'd get sloshed around and could get hurt.
I try to use a plastic cup instead of a net.

They had some really nice wood stands at my LFS but they wanted over $100 for them, screw dat noise.

Thankfully since my table has such a wide base, even a couple Bassets playing didn't move the water at all.

Just remember that 1 Litre of water = 1 kg.
So a 29G tank is 104 kg or around 230 lbs!
If you get it down to around 18L or 4G, then that plus the rocks would probably be around 50lbs, which would probably be doable to little with help.

Or you can try Shawnie's tested a true way

Have you thought about putting a hard flat surface on top of the carpet under the tank? That might be a much cheaper solution, and would protect the carpet around the tank.

Well, after much consideration I will first try to find a stand on craigslist, if that fails I will just buy a new one from a store. It's true, they're a bit pricey but at least I don't have to mind my steps when I'm walking by the tank. Having some hard surface under the stand would be cheaper but I doubt it will solve my problem. I think the shaking comes more from the flexibility of the stand rather than the carpet below. Plus, I can return the current stand, apparently Petsmart has a 60 day return policy.

Check out Kijiji as well!

I know in my area, Kijiji is way more actively used that Craigslist, I've stopped even bothering to look there anymore because it never seems to have anything on it.

Plus I find Kijiji more user friendly.

Well Kijiji is where I posted actually, I didn't want to confuse the other members since most of them know of Craigslist and what it does and Kijiji basically does the same thing. Kijiji is more popular in Canada and Craigslist more popular in USA. Probably that's one of the reasons you can't find many local Craigslist adds in Canada.
