What sort if time frame would be looking at if i put a canister filter in a very well established tank 55g so i could get a biological system running threw the filter so its healthy enough to help out in the cycle of another tank??

id say a good 3-4 weeks

Shawnie is correct on that, I use a HOT magnum canister and 3 - 4 weeks is a good time frame.
One thing that can help it along would be to squeeze your other filter's floss into the canister as a good starter culture....it won't necessarily speed it up the time though.
