Developping MTS

I want a new tank!! >.<

I'm an Australian. I was just wondering how much you would suggest buying a second hand tank for

I would like something a fair bit bigger than what I have. Maybe a 200L tank? The bonus is I already have a lot of the stuff to set up and maintain it...

My aunt still owes me my 21st birthday present and with Christmas and another birthday coming up I'm hoping I can convince her to give me a tank

Oh dear I have NO patience.
Want new tank naooo!!! >.< God I need a job so I can afford one!!

WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

haha MTS case here. I know how it feels You can try looking up craigslist on your area. Not sure about Australia but a lot of our members here get their second hand tanks from Craigslist and a lot of deals they have there. Good luck and keep us updated on the find.

I got a 55g off craig's list for $50.00. It came with a filter, heater lights and sand.
I picked up a 20g and 55g at a yardsale for $20.00. They came with a hood, lights gravel, air pumps, power heads, filters and a box of other odds and ends.

Hope that gives you an idea of used prices.

Be careful what you ask for... you might get it tenfold here!

Go ahead, indulge yourself. Take your time and find the right deal for you.

A job is just going to make it (MTS) worse.

Yes but with a job I might (temporarily) satisfy the cravings. I currently have $150 to my name with bills yet to come. Going to the pet store makes me cry, since I can barely afford the fuel to get there. *sigh*

Hello Lil. Try not to get too stressed with your MTS (or lack of). Search around your area and on line for "deals". They are there. Sometimes we just have to be patient and look for them.
Best of luck!

I suffer from severe MTS, (21 tanks now), & I'm always on the hunt for more tanks at bargain prices. You should be able to find some fairly good deals in the classifieds section of your major papers or in a specific classifieds paper if you don't want to or can't do the online buying. You should be able to pick up a SH 200+lt tank with stand & accessories for well under $400. If you only want the glass work it can often be worth talking to your local aquarium dealer & see what SH tanks they have in stock. Don't rule out new either. I have managed to get some remarkably cheap new tanks here in Perth lately. A 4x1.5x1.5ft with glass lids & poly base set me back $145 & my new 6x2x2ft only cost me $545 with lids & poly. I know that sounds expensive but if you were to check prices of those tanks new, many places would want $300-500 for the 4ft tanks & $900-1300 for the 6ft.

Run through the classifieds though for SH tanks & you should find heaps that are under $250 with stand & maybe some of the other stuff like filters & heaters etc.

Oh, & welcome to Fishlore. Good to see another aussie enlightened enough to be on this site. The people here are very helpful & will go out of thier way to help you where they can.

I've made an appointment to do my tax return. I'm thinking with the money I should allocate it something like...

$500 new tv
$200 new clothes
$1000 fish tank and stocking

Your fish tank can be your new television! And I don't think your dog can break it, probably jump in it though LOL

Mannn....I wish I could get a deal like that. Actually I would just want the box with the powerhead & odds and ends. Those boxes are the best!

21 tanks...how big is your place? Oh God, I need to seek treatment before it's too late and end up with +20 tanks. Is there a vaccine or something I could get?

Do you have all 21 tanks running at one time?

I don't even know where 21 tanks could be put! I have maybe 4 or 5 in mind but... I don't even know where to put them! Hence the betta in the bedroom. My housemates like looking at my fish a little but they're not all that interested. I want one of those big gorgeous tanks like you see at the pet store!! And we do have one whole room of the house that is rarely used... just has a piano...

Maybe I should turn it into an aquarium? Do you think the house owners will mind ?? Teehee.

20 starts with 4 or 5.....

Once you get around 8, additional tanks aren't much extra work to maintain, which is how 10 becomes 20.

So I shouldn't tell you that it gets worse as you get more tanks? I have 6 tanks inside the house & the rest are now out in the double garage that I'm turning into a fish room. The car got evicted to the small garage & my tools to a reinforced shed. I guess I also shouldn't tell you that 22 is on order. That's a special tank though. All 10x3x4ft of it. I can't wait. I haven't even decided what I'm going to do with it yet but I'm thinking Amazon Biotype. I'm hoping a project that large will quench the thirst for more tanks & fish. At least temporarily.
No vaccine. If you hear of one let me know. I'm spending too much of the companys profits.

9 in a 1 bedroom apartment... OMG where do YOU live? I have like a granny flat which is pretty much the same thing, and I have just the room for 1 tank on the kitchen counter. No way can I have 9 o.O

hehehe sounds about right.

I'm slightly satisfied at the moment because there is room in my tank for 2 more, maybe 3 more fish.

Unfortunately my mumma guppy was killed in a freak landslide last night No clue how it happened but I woke to find her trapped underneath a plant and some rocks o.O. RIP Butterfly

I'm sad to have lost her, but still excited about more fish!

I currently have 3 tanks and still have room for more but parents are insisting 3 is already too many! But talking about 21? I haven't told them about Nutter's amount of tanks. haha

I'm deeply sorry about your loss. What a shock. Landslide...?

Yeah I know. It was weird. But I had noticed that the plant had a few pieces of gravel stuck in it from when I had done a transfer (moved gravel between tanks for bacteria) and I'd thought I'd gotten it all out.
She was stuck under a plant with a couple pieces of the gravel which is bigger than what I use in my tanks holding it down. Her body was twisted so she'd obviously been trying to get out. I so wish I'd spotted it!!! But she was busy getting in the way of my photos last night so I'm thinking it happened during the night. She was well pregnant too *sigh* Poor Butterfly! I'm sorry darling

Gawd!! At least I've got a 4bdrm house & an extra garage to work with.
I don't suppose I should tell you all this but I've just counted the total number of tanks I have today, including my live food, fry raising & quarantine tanks. There's 35 of them, still not including the one on order. Fortunatley there's only 26 that are running permanantly. The rest I just fill & use a cycled filter when I need them. I have alot of my tanks on a not quite fully automatic water change system, so all I have to do is the occasional vaccuum, fill the water change tanks, trim & fertilize plants & clean the glass on most of them. The feeding part is only a few minutes staring at each tank really so I don't count that as maintainance.

Hmmm... I wonder how far I am from being able to open my own aquarium store....

Nutter, I'm right behind ya! I've got 21 tanks up and running atm and will be starting up two more this week.

My water changes are done weekly by me (I stretch them out over a 3 day period), but I run weekly full parameter tests on all of my tanks so I do the proper size water change for each.

Do you keep a log? I've found it's great for keeping an eye on the history and progress of tanks. Microsoft Excel is a wonderful tool.
