New tank problems!!!

Hi All,

I just bought a 29 gallon tank about a week ago. I let it run for 24 hours then added 6 small gold fish last Tuesday. Then on last Friday and I notice 4 of the fish have white spots on the fin and one of them appeared really sick. So finally I use Super ICK Cure in the tank last night. Today I lost 2 fishes.

Now I am not sure what to do? Because according to the direction, I should repeat the medicine in 48 hours and do not change water in the mean time. But I am afraid, they will be all die if I do not change the water.

ammonia is about .50 PPM to 1.00 PPM. nitrates and nitiates are all zero.

Please help!!!

Thanks!
Timmy

"ammonia is about .50 PPM to 1.00 PPM"

Theres part of your problem, plus did u add any conditioner to the water??

Or the fish may have been sick before u even got them??

Or you u should have let the water cycle for a bit longer !!

I did change 15% water every other day and I did treat the water before I pour them in.

I bought the gold fish at my local Wal-mart and did not notice any problems when I bought them.

I am thinking about stopping the medicine now.

Thanks!

Hi goldfish! Welcome to FishLore

I'm really sorry about the loss of your fish.
I'm going to give you a link to read about the Nitrogen cycle
It's very important for you to understand what's going on in your tank right now.
Cycling can take up to a month. During this time ammonia (from fish waste and left over food) and nitrites can reach toxic levels.
While the fish is trying to fight the outside stressors (toxic water) it weakens their immune system and leaves them open to illness such as ICH and possible death.
It's quite possible they were sick when you got them. They're not kept in the greatest conditions which also weakens them.

In order to try and get your fish through the cycling process, it would be a good idea to begin daily water changes. Use Prime as your water conditioner. That'll detox the ammonia for 24 hours between water changes.
Continue to do this until your tank is cycled. Your readings will be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite with some nitrates showing.
Be patient, it'll take some time.

Now, for the ich, you can slowly raise the temp to 84F. Leave it there for at least 2 weeks.
Increase aeration to make up for less oxygen in warmer water.
Do thorough gravel vacs while doing your daily water changes to pick up any ich spores in the gravel.
It might be a good idea to sterilize the gravel vac between uses to kill off any spores.

All that being said, goldies are huge waste producers and can grow really big. 29g isn't big enough for 4 goldfish. It's recommended 20g for the first goldy then 10g's for each additional goldfish.

Best of luck, I hope they feel better soon.

Your welcome Timmy
Good luck, goldies are great fish. We have several members who keep them.
I hope you'll share some pics when they're feeling better.

If you would go under My Settings on the top left and fill in your aquarium info, it'll help any members offering more advice. Thanks!

Hi, welcome to fishlore!

I agree with Lucy, you should discontinue the ich medicine. The disease can't survive in water over 82 degrees, so 2 weeks at 84, raised slowly so you don't stress the goldies, should help.

and in case you don't know, Prime is a particular brand of water conditioner that is highly recommended. But I don't think I've seen it at walmart - you may have to find a locally-owned fish store.
