6 Zebra Danios in a 6 gallon tank?

I am new to fish in general and don't have a lot of space. I bought a 6 gallon tank and have begun the process of cycling (no fish). As I look ahead to stocking my tank with fish in a couple of weeks, I know that my options are limited because of the small size. My kids are wanting Zebra Danios. I read that they do better in groups of at least 6. Can I put that many in a tank this size? Would they do okay with only say 4?

welcome to fishlore mamafish!!!
congrats on cycling fishless
unfortunately, I do not think even 4 danios would be ok in that size tank they like to have more swim space and with the smaller tanks, its hard enough to keep the water parimeters on track as it is..overstocking with the danios, might be too much for you...how about 4-5 neon or cardinal tetras? or a betta? or some sparkling gouramis? even a cool shrimp colony would be fun for kids..although they do hide allot ...im sure some other members will have more suggestions and I hope you and the kids have fun!

Hi Mamafish,

Welcome to fishlore! Great choice to join... Although Shawnie is correct about the space needed for swimming, I have to say that is exactly how I started!!!! I had a 6 gal tank with 6 long finned Danios. I still have the Danios but have since moved them to a 20 gal.

Shortly after you stock your tank, you will find that you love it SO much, you will want another tank - this is so true.... With the 6 gal., get some smaller fish as Shawnie suggested and plan the Danios (which are fantastic fish!) for the larger tank that you will be either getting or planning for in the near future!!

Have fun and please post pictures!!

Zebra danios need at least 10-15gals minimum - they really love swimming space! I would suggest a betta, a dwarf puffer, 3 male endler's livebearers, 6 ember tetras or some shrimp.

I wouldn't suggest neons - 6 neons would be alright in 7.5gal minimum IMO, but only as long as that 7.5gal was at least 6 times their body length long and there was lots of live plants. The bio-load they will create, although small could easily tip the smaller tank into a mini-cycle.
