Something WEIRD in the tank??? Baby snails? or something else?

Hi,

I was looking in my tropical tank this AM and I noticed some really strange things in the gravel at the bottom they were very tiny, white things with tenticles (lots of tenticle type things) I vac'ed them up, but what the heck were they I thought maybe baby snails (I do have a few little snails that rode in on a used decoration I got...) IDK what baby snails look like... or is it some kind of parasite?

Thanks!

Without seeing it, my first guess would also be hydra.
They look like little trees, almost, with a main trunk of a body and then a number of tentacles sticking out of the top. They move by somersaulting, and feed on any number of tiny animals (large ones are capable of catching small fry, I believe, but shouldn't be harmful to any grown aquarium fish).

Thanks guys!... after looking up pics of hydra, i'm pretty sure, though not 100% that that's what I've got! How do I get rid of them? they're so creepy! eww! LOL. So they won't hurt my fish, right? I swear I've had nothing but trouble with this new tank... I think it all came from some floating plants I got at the pond store... a week after putting them in I had, ICH, snails and now these things... I tell ya! Thanks again!

Ps. I still have some in there... I guess I didn't vac them all... they're really tiny and white, too small for my camera to focus on, unfortunately, but thanks for all you're great help!

Hello. Wow! This is a new one for me as well. Thanks for the link. Great book mark!
Best of luck Caligo. Hopefully you can get them removed after several vacuums.

Nope, they shouldn't hurt your fish (unless it's a breeding tank).
I wonder if they were feeding on the ich. Hydras need live food, I believe, and it sounds like the ich was the only such thing. Between the vacuuming and the lack of food (presuming the ich infestation is gone), they should be gone very soon.

good point. as far as I can tell the ich is gone, I don't see anymore on the fish and I have the temp at 84, however it hasn't been a whole 2 weeks yet. I do see more hydra today than yesterday... they're all kinda waving arround by the plant pot... but if they do eat ich they can stay as long as they want, lol.

I have read that hydra can come from overfeeding the tank also, maybe cut back on the amount of food that you are giving.

I see... I only have 1 fish in there at the moment... maybe that's why. I feed him once a day, usually a shrimp pellet or veggie wafer... perhaps it is too much for just him.
