help with 10 and 30 tank

I just put my old 10 gallon filter with my new 30 gallon filter in my 30 gallon aquarium last night. i wanted to know if there is anyway i could putmy 10 gallon filter back in my tank so i can put new goldfish in it without having to recycle. someone said i would have to wait 4 weeks with the 10 gallon filter in my 30 gallon tank but i heard i could just leave a thread from my old filter in the new 30 gallon and it would stay cycled? advice please!

When i started my 29 gallon tank in august, i just put a used filter from my ten gallon in the tank near the new filters intake. I also took a fake plant from my ten gallon and put it in at the same time. Just by adding some flake food to the aquarium to give the bacteria some ammonia to consume, my tank cycled completely in about a week. Four days into the cycle i added all the live plants that i have listed in my aquarium info and i am sure that also aided in the cycling by providing more bacteria.

So what your trying to say is you want to put the 10g filter back on your 10g tank but leave the filter media from that filter to seed on the 30g right?

right. does this work? will this cause my 30 gallon to recycle and kill my fish?

If you want an instant cycle you need to leave the filter (or the media) in the 30g. The reason you need to do this, is because there isnt enough bacteria developed in your newer filter, so it needs the bacteria in the 10g's filter to keep it going. You could transfer the cartrige as well as the media into the 30g's filter, but once you transfer your 10g filter you will need to start the cycle over.

EDIT: I would leave the media in the tank for about 2-3 weeks.
