What about a small school of say five Marble Hatchet Fish? They have that odd look. Make sure you have a tight lid in your tank, they are known to jump out.

Or you could go with some of the Tetras that look like pirannah a bit, like a school of five or six Colombian Tetras.

I agree, betta kinda rips apart it's food and you can deffinitely keep it in a 10 gallon. But no pirahna type fish that you can keep in a 10 gallon.
Silver dollars are in the same family as pirahnas and they can live happily in a 55 gallon.

As far as i know there are no carnivorous fish that could be kept in a tank that small. Tiger barbs are known as tiny pirahna's because they are agressive... but i wouldnt put them in anything smaller than a 20g... and they need to be in a school...

Another option is phantom tetras... or blackskirt tetras.... theyre pirahna like

Keep a school of Pristella Tetras. They school just like the pirhanas, they live in the same places as pirhanas, and they are even both in the Characidae family!

Mine feed as a group, and in a 10g tank they would probably look like mini pirhanas.

Here is a photo comparisson.

Puffers are carnivorous fish that really rip their food apart! A couple of dwarf puffers or a red-eyed puffer would work in a 10 gallon.

Tetras and pirhanas are in the same family, so a school of small tetras is your best bet over a single fish, cause I'm sure you want to see the FRENZY.

dwarf puffer is the only fish that I can think of that fits this description.
Out of curiosity, why do you want a fish that "rips its food apart"?

There are lots of disc shaped tetras around which would make good pirahna subsitutes. Things like the Black phantom tetra, Serpae or possibly even Black skirt tetra would be great! I would reccomend Bleeding heart tetras - but they get a bit too big for a 10gal. They are all in the same family as Pirahnas (Characidae), school in a similar manner to Pirahnas and all come from around the Amazon river area, so if you wanted a biotype it would be similar to that of the Pirahna. They also look fairly similar! You will find that if you look closely you might see a pretty nasty set of snappers on those little tetras.

Otherwise, for fish that rip food apart then Dwarf puffers would be a good choice.... They come from a different area (different continent actually - they're an Asian species), look significantly different in almost every way but are great fish to keep nevertheless!
