| | Fish Helper | Does clarity work Hi ppl, i,ve just been to my LFS and brought a bottle of clarity to clear a cloudy tank. I've done several big water changes and it doesnt shift the murkiness. I will put the recomended dose in when i get home from work but i need to know if this works before the shops shut in case in need to get something else. Hopefully someone will tell me it works. Any info wld be appreciated.

| | Fish Helper | I would put activated carbon in one of the filter cartriges rather than add a chemical to treat the problem. Carbon will remove the cloudiness within about 24hrs. How long since you first filled the tank? |

How long since you first filled the tank? | The filter is a juwel built in one so has a carbon sponge in already if this is what you mean. The tank was first filled about 6 weeks ago, i think, using cycle to start it off. i also think it is a bactierial bloom which the clarity will clear(soposeidly)
Was 8 weeks ago not 6. |

| | Fish Helper | Ok. Yes if it's cloudy still it possibly is a bacterial bloom, or it could be the substrate if you are using a nutrient substrate.
Those carbon pads don't last very long in my experience & need to be replaced every 2-3
weeks to keep having an effect. I use carbon granules when I have to use carbon as it tends to absorb more, last longer & be cheaper. I haven't used carbon for more than a few days for years now though so maybe those pads are better than they used to be but they will still need replacing regularly after thier absorbing qualities have been used up. |

| | Fish Helper | In the juwel tanks they have 7 different filter sponges and a box of CERAX(which holds loads of good bact),The carbon sponge needs to b changed every 6-10 weeks, so i will b changing that soon. The substrate i use is black sand and this does'nt cloud. I am banking on the CLARITY to work. Fingers and toes crossed.LOL |

| | Moderator | check your pH levels...these products usually bump it quite a bit...and it also sounds like a bacteria bloom to me not so much the subtrate......cycle would cause a huge bacteria bloom once you stop using it as its bacteria isnt self sustaining... |

| | Fish Helper | Yes clarity does work I got home last night and added 15ml of CLARITY to my very cloudy 240 litre(uk)
tank. WOW,after 2 hrs it was nearly crystal clear. Turned out the light and went to bed. Got up this morning and turned the light on and it was looking 80% better . I changed the poly pad and added a further 10ml just to clear the remainder of the dreaded murk. I'm now at work and can't wait till i get home tonight to see the results(bit i will constantly hassle my wife too keep me posted on the progress). So the answer to my original post is, YES IT WORKS and v,well at that.

| | Moderator | all of those products work well ...and fast....its the issues they leave behind that scare me ...years ago, everyone around me used crystal clear by ap and we thought it was amazing!! but other issues happened with our fish...please remember that the reason for cloudyness should be taken in consideration with everyone and usually its an uncycled tank or a mini cycle..just using a product to clear that up (which im glad you are happy with that!!!) doesnt mean the underlining issue isnt still there |

| | Fish Helper | Yes you are certainly right Shawnie, i have also(forgot to mention) checked the water 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 5 nitrate. The only thing i had to do was wash the left over residue on the glass inside the tank. Fish look ok and lively.

| | Fish Helper | From seachem's site: Quote:
Upon adding Clarity™ to the water, you will see a cloudy haze begin to form. This is normal and means that Clarity™ is beginning to work.
The water is filled with tiny pieces of floating matter that were not visible to the naked eye. Clarity™ makes those pieces of matter begin to clump together. As they clump together they form larger peices of matter that are now visible, hence the cloudiness. Once this matter has clumped together, it is a simple matter of mechanical filtration to remove the residue. Matter that was once too small to get caught in filter media is now in large enough clumps.
| So basically, if you have no mechanical filtration, it will not help to add clarity. Clarity just makes the particles easier to catch by clumping them together. It affects physical particulates, and not soluble nutrients. They use a flocculant agent. Flocculation is actually used in the treatment of drinking water too. |

Nick | Im glad you are happy with it nick !! and dont mean to doubt any of it...only going on by other products ive seen and tested..clarity was not one of them...but I am curious if you knew your ph prior to using it and if you tested it after using it? I dont think these products do much for your cycle or such, but I do know some mess with the ph drastically...just curious about clarity |
