Maintaining Filter Bacteria and other questions

hi again all

Over the last day or so Ive been looking at all of my tanks and tonight I decided to move the fish out of one of my tanks to populate another one, The tank That I have added the fish to is about the same size but they were both under stocked and by doing this it means I will have freed up a 2ft tank for other things

The Tank that I have freed up is Juwel with a large black enclosure in one corner with the heater and filter in.
If I was to put the filter media from this filter into a stocking or something and hang it in another setup tank will the bacteria remain so that I can transfer it back again once Ive re-done the tank?

Can anyone suggest a good way of hiding the enclosure aswell?

Edit:

Can anyone also tell me what the bacteria is called in TSS compared to thors such a cycle? I was browsing around my local store today and found an "Own Brand" Tank starter. It says on the back that it has "Nitrifying Bacteria plus Bacillus Bacteria" im just wondering if this is any good as Ive seen the store people recommend it a few times and im already putting a complaint letter together to send to their head office(another story).

thanks again all and there may well be other tank photo's coming soon.

mark

Hello Mark. As long as you keep the filter media wet and it has an ammonia source, it will do well and you can use it whenever you like on any tank you like (freshwater). You can hide the media any where in your tank or even the filter. If you think the fish in the tank that you are moving it to can handle additional filtration/current you can just move the entire filter and run it.

Thanks for the quick responce. I should have made my self a little clearer.

I am taking down a tank to re-organise, I have moved the fish to another tank to free this one up and needed to know that by putting the filter media in a stocking (hanging in another tank) that It would not kill the bacteria so that I can put the media back in the filter once im ready to setup the tank again. I am unable to move the filter enclosure as it is stuck the the corner of the tank. I have managed to find a picture of the tank but its not very big, notice the box enclosure in the corner. This holds the filter media, power head and heater all in one.

Click the image to open in full size.

does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could hide the box aswell?
depending on what happens I may end up dividing up the tank to house 2 betta's but im going to wait a see how it turns out.

thanks again all in advance

Yes you can hang the media in another tank that has a heater & a supply of ammonia, just like Ken said.
For hiding the box you could either put a few plants in front of it, real or fake, or you could use a hollow log cut in half lengthwise & stood up in the corner. If you use the log you will have to make sure it doesn't impede the flow of water in & out of the filter box.

From this site:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=19607
Principle Ingredients: Purified water, patented and patent pending strains of: Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira.

Bacillus just means rod-shaped bacteria (you can google image it to see)
It just describes their morphology and doesn't really say anything else. E. coli and Anthrax are also bacillus. Coccus is another bacterial shape, and prefixes usually tell exactly what clusters they form. I'm sure you have heard of streptococcus or staphylococcus, that means that the bacteria either form in clumps or chains!
Just sounds like someone decided to put on big words in hopes people would buy it to me.

I looked into each of the different types of Nitrogen Fixing bacteria and found this:
Nitrosomonas has a bacillus shape. (changes ammonia to nitrite)
Nitrosospira I couldn't find exactly
Nitrospira are what change nitrite to nitrate, and I *think* are bacillus too.

You can look into it more, but that label seems like they are leading you on.

I have had luck with Seachem's Stability, I've had 2 successful 7 day cycles with this but I guess its not "confirmed" to use as I've been the only one that's used it .

Thanks for the replies.
I was interested to see about yet another "Quick Fix". As I stated before, I am in the middle of drafter a letter the the stores head office regarding a few issues that I have had an witnessed over the last few months. One of the things that I may be asking is for them to clarify what bacteria is contained within their product.

Thanks for the heads up on the filter media aswell, I will be taking the last fish out tommorow after work and will be moving the filter media to another tank until I can get this one setup again. Looking around and using the "search" function I have come across a few things that I may be trying out with this tank, If they are a success and I like the outcome then other tanks may follow. One of items that I found during the search may have helped me overcome the issue with the filter box in the corner aswell.

Thanks again everyone for all the help and input and I hope to get photo's up of the new tank setup over the next few days.
