good starter water testing kit

I hope I don't sound too much like a klutz, but I'm planning to get a water testing kit for my tank. I have a 5gallon tropical community tank (with snails) so I'm lost as to what is a good starter tester kit.

What should I look for? Certain price range? Some good brands to look for?

Hi Betafish
The API Master kit is highly recommended. It's very accurate and has everything you need. It can be expensive but it lasts a really long time and gives 100's of tests.
It looks intimidating at first, but it's really easy to use.
I wouldn't recommend strips, they're not reliable.

Most everyone here agrees that the API Master test kit for Freshwater is the best. The initial price seems a bit high, but when you consider that you get hundreds of tests out of it, the price per test comes way down. It also is considered the most accurate, whereas the test strips are noturious for being inaccurate.

One thing to note though, if you use Amquel+ as a water conditioner, the API test kit will read false positive for ammonia.

Yeah, I definitely agree, API Master test kits are bomb.
Its usually about $30, but sometimes you can find some good deals.

At petsmart, the API was 32. I bought it on amazon for 23 including shipping.

edit: sorry, just noticed that you aren't in the US. I am not sure if Amazon delivers to Canada.
