Hello Mibro. We don't really suggest how many schools you can have in a tank but how many fish should go into a tank. Then it depends on the adult size of the fish.

Ken is right. It's all about how many inches of fish a tank can comfortably hold for it's surface area. Once you know how many inches of fish you can have in your tank, then you can start looking at what fish you want to have, how many of each you want to have & if they are all compatible with each other.

I know what you mean and for this size tank there aren't many loner fish you can ad that would get along.

Many times if the fish are the same size and shape they'll school together.
I've got cardinals and glow lights. They school together, yet it gives a little variety.

If you have schooling fish, one school is all you need. Of course if you come up with a stocking plan that will allow more schools, that would be fine.

You could have a school of 6 corydoras and another school of 6-8 tetras. This would leave space for 5-6 guppies or danios.

Or you could have some combination and a drawf guarami.

I think the reason why you only see schooling fish for smaller tanks is because the smaller fish school, whereas the larger fish don't have to.. they don't need that extra protection.

But I really like Neon tetras to be honest. I think they have become one of my favorite schooling fish.
