It's a lot better if you take most of the water out then plant. Turn your filter off also. If you have buckets it would be a lot easier that way you can have a water line of 3-4 inches without actually getting rid of the water. Here's a good tool kit for aquascaping. http://cgi.ebay.com/Aquarium-Live-Pl...item4837dc28be

When I work with plants I just take a couple of inches of water out of the tank. Only when I am into adding substrate or performing major re-planting I remove most fish I can and turn the filter(s) off. I usually trim my plants twice a month.

Just be careful to keep your hands and arms without harmful to fish substances (e.g. perfume, body lotion) and you should be alright.

Ending up with a beautiful planted tank takes months of work but it is definitely worth it.

You'll love having plants. You really cant go wrong. Have fun with them. It would be a big help to yourself if you have a plan before you start buying and planting.

Hi & welcome to fishlore. I'm planning to get a planted aquarium myself and I'm doing some research. I came across some videos that explain how to handle plants and get the best of your planted aquarium. They have no sound but all is explained in the subtitles. I have found them very helpful, maybe they will help you as well.
