Looking at a bigger tank...

Hi Everyone, I am looking at upgrading to a 55 gallon tank in the spring. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy the tank instead of the start up kits that that they sell at Petsmart? I guess the only thing that I would not use is the filter or the heater that comes with the kit, I think I am either going to go with 2 Aquaclear 70's or a canister filter, any thoughts?

Can you look on craigslist for a tank? I would want to buy each item rather than a kit so that I could choose which brands I get.

I'd scour craigslist first. If that doesn't work, I would buy the starter kit, use the tank, hood, lights and filter and then buy your canister/AC 70 and use it along with filter that comes with it. Personally I have a Petsmart starter kit for all my tanks and think the filters that come with it work fine (I also add sponge media to each one). I've even bought other Top Fin filters for extra filtration on all my tanks. Using one brand makes it so I can use the same filter media in all of them.

Everyone above has mentioned it. Try craigslist first. A lot of members here have found great deals for tanks there and you'd be lucky to find a great deal near your area. Best of luck!

Hello Wolf. Some good suggestions above. If you do decide to buy the "kit" you can always save the heater and filter that comes with the kit as spares. Personally I love the Aqua Clear (AC) filters. You could upgrade to an AC 110, 500gph instead of 2 70's. You may have to order it on line. I know drsfostersmith.com has them.
Will be looking forward to seeing your new tank in the spring.
Take care!

Thanks everyone, I have looked around craigslist and found some good deals. However, I think I am going to get a kit because like Ken said I'll have extra filter just in case. Oh and I will have bloody parrots!

I got all my tanks off CL, and I have about 20 extra filters that usually come with the tanks. Then you can upgrade if you want - you'd do that anyway with the kit. Plus CL is A LOT cheaper.
