making the best of the bad situation

I've known for awhile (mostly since joining fish/lore) that I started my fish tank up a few months ago (before I joined), not exactly the right way.....

So my fish have all survived the cycles that are suppose to happen before you enter them into fish tank, but right now my delema is surrounding my air pump, and algaee control.

I have in 5 gallon fish tank
- 3 zebra danios
- 4 neon tetras
- 2 african dwarf frogs
- 1 catfish otto/ algae eater
- 3 cleaner snails (not sure what kind)

This makes my fish tank a tad over crowded.... and the bioload of the snails isn't helping either.... Should I get some kind of loach to help clean the tank??

I do partical water changes, and I clean it on a regular basis, helping to keep them alive. It also has a fillter for the tank, but i also added an air stone to add more oxygen to the water, but nothing i got in my tank already can hold it down, so half the time i got to turn it off...

As i can't afford another tank, or too put anything else really in my tank, i was thinking of putting the air stone in an emplty glass wine bottle.... would that be safe??

Thanks soooo much

yes your tank is very overcrowded I would recommend returning most of your fish you could keep the ADF's tho. also i dont recommend you getting a loach.

Hi Betafish
I have to agree. An airstone wouldn't hurt, however, it won't help decrease the bio-load in your tank or give your fish and frogs room to swim.
Please don't add anymore fish to your tank.
Perhaps you can get a larger used tank?
Do you have Craig's List in Canada? You might be able to get a good deal there.
Sorry, I couldn't give you better news.

Oh, wait, I'm confused....your aquarium info says you have a 10 gallon?

Hello,

In your aquarium info you have no test kit so I would deff get an API Master Test kit to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Having that bioload in such a small tank can make the nitrAtes build up faster which means more frequent water changes. Having a test kit will help you monitor that. Nitrates should be less then 20. Another thing is don't overfeed. Do you have green algae or brown algae? For the airstone, get some aquarium suction cups with clips to anchor the airline tubing to the tank wall, that should keep it down. Also overcrowding a tank can cause problems such as high nitrAtes, aggression; fin-nipping, stress and disease. Taking some fish back will help with that but that is up to you. You need so save up for a bigger tank! The best of luck.

I'm with Lucy.......Oh, you have a 10 gallon?

I've found in Canada that the craigslist is not well used. I looked often there for my area and couldn't find much of what I was looking for.
but Kijiji is the same as a craigslist and I found was more used for my area.
You can check it out and maybe find some cheaper used tanks in your area.
