| Angels I have 2 Angels in my 72 gallon tank. The bigger angel would chase the litter angel around the tank. Today the little angel was hiding and then I notice the bigger angel nipping at the little angle. The bigger angel dosen't bother the other fish.
I want to get a tank divider but they don't make one for 72 gallons. I don't want the bigger angel to kill the little angel.
I was told that if the bigger angel is a female, they get more aggressive doing breeding season but I'm not sure if it's a female or if it's breeding season.
Any suggestions?

| When angels pair they do get more aggressive but this just sounds like a larger angel being rough with a smaller angel. I suggest separating them or taking the smaller one back to the LFS if possible. When choosing angels for a tank it's best to choose angels approx the same size.

| Hello and Welcome to FishLore!
I agree with Butterfly.
I'd like to add.....usually if there are only two Angels, then one will attack the other........ aggressive and territorial...as they are a cichlid. lol You can always add another Angel and see what that does. I've read that they prefer to be in groups of three or more. I hope it all works out for you....Angelfish are a great addition to any established tank that can accommodate their needs. | WELCOME TO FISHLORE!
I'd kindly disagree. Angels normally do better in pairs as they tend to be very territorial and like to bully if there is one left out such as if you have 3 angels. Two might tend to pair up and the other might be bullied or left out which might lead to problems. I'd agree with Butterfly in returning the small one or big one and getting one that is of the same size.
Best of luck! |

Hello Children11. Welcome to Fish Lore. Sorry to hear that you have an Angel that is misbehaving I have to agree with Butterfly/Carol and Peacemaker.
I've provided a link on Angel Fish above that you may find helpful if you haven't already read it.
Best of luck!

| Thank you for all your replies. We actually have a square 30 gallon tank as well as my 72 gallon tank. Our 30 gallon was set up about 3 weeks ago and have 4 fish that will get about 2 to 3 inches, 2 catfish and 1 Plecostomas that will get 8 inches. I was thinkling about putting the smaller angel in the 30 gallon tank.
Is 30 gallon ok for an angelfish once it's established?
My bigger angel picks only on my smaller angel. If I put my smaller angel in the 30 gallon tank, I don't want the bigger angel to start picking on my other fish.
Will it be a big shock for my angel going from 1 tank to another?
How would I sit my angel on top of the water to get him used to the 30 gallon water temp before putting him in?
Any suggestions,
Thank you

| Moving the smaller angel is an excellent idea. How much difference is there between the two tanks?
What are the water parameters? ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates?

I would say the 2 tanks are probably about 4 months apart. My 72 gallon tank is perfect with all the testing. My 30 gallon tank, the pH was up alittle but the ammonia was in normal range. My husband did a water change but I havn't tested it after that because I just had sugery (hysterectomy) and can't do much right now.
I was just talking to the pet store who told me that it sounds like it might be heating season and the bigger angel "wants some". Coulld that be possible? It this the season for angelfish? How can you tell a female from a male?

Bernice | If the tank parameters are the same then moving the smaller angel would be no problem.
As far as a "heat" season. No angels don't go into heat like dogs and cats.
It is a bigger angel picking on a smaller angel pure and simple and need to be separated until they are approx the same size. I don't think I would listen to anymore advice from that LFS employee.
the sure way to tell the gender of angel fish is to see them spawning. Male and female breeding tubes are different. Angelfish are stimulated to breed by water conditions, plentiful food and to some extent weather conditions.
Although shawnie does a good job of looking at the shape of angels and telling gender. So pictures would be cool

Bernice | I don't see the pictures. Try visiting this link. http://www.picresize.com/
Our web resizer doesn't resize the photos for us anymore, very complicated but no one's fault. We just have to resize the photo ourselves. Butterfly's link gives a great instruction. |
