Live Plants and Aquascaping!

Hello All! Newbie here...new to the forum anyway. I've owned fish before but pretty much just Bettas. I bought a 10 gallon tank for my 14 month old daughter who loves 'fffsh', and now I'm hooked. I've spent hours looking at aquascapes, and I really want to make my tank perfect.

Does anyone have any advice for starting some live plants? And an input on how to give my fish the best habitat for their needs?

Right now I have an Angel and two Tiger Barbs, they cohabit well and I do plan on upgrading to at LEAST a 30 gallon to accommodate my Angel Fish.

Here's a photo of my tank, please disregard the two patches of algae in the back, I missed a spot! Also, my daughter broke my regular camera, so excuse the poor photo quality.

Also, I plan on switching the blue gravel to black.

welcome to fishlore!!!! love the kids at an early age getting into the fish hobby

www.plantgeek.com has some great pictures and explains a ton of about lighting and such for each plant..I would check out the java ferns, moss etc and the anubias...those are pretty easy for beginners

I will caution on your barbs though..they are notorious fin nippers especially if not in a proper school of 6 or more....they will start getting after your angels delicate fins so maybe check out craigslist.org to find a good deal very soon! good luck with the tank!

Yep! You need to determine how many watts per gallon do you have and if you want to keep low light med light or high light plants. med-high light plants need co2 more than the fish inhabitants give off so you may need to use flourish excel or a co2 system which cost a lot. Having a nutrient based substrate will also help plants grow better but plants can grow with regular substrate but I prefer having substrates with nutrients in it. If you do go with the more demanding plants you may need to get your fertilizers as well. I'm sure they're are more info I can't just think of any atm.

I totally agree with Shawnie, I put two angels in my dad's barb tank and man they nipped the heck out of one and died. I was lucky enough to save the other which is hanging out in my 10g until I find him a better home.

Check this out as well, it may inspire you to what kind of plants and how you want to aquascape your tank.

That's so funny because I just found that website, and have been looking at it all morning!

I found out about the Tiger Barbs disposition after bringing them home and doing some research, but so far they have been leaving my Angel alone...do you think that's just temporary and they may turn?

I do yes....the tank doesnt have enough room for them and their school size is much too small ...they will get bored and start after the angels

in bigger schools , they are so busy getting a pecking order amongst themselves, they dont bother others usually.....but there is exceptions to all fish rules....

Hi Harper and WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

Great looking tank you have for your daughter there Tiger barbs are known for their behavior in nipping fins. So I'd suggest getting them some more tiger barbs because they do better in groups then re-homing your angel to a new tank. Other members might have more input about that. Best of luck and hope you enjoy your stay here in FL!
