| | Fish Mentor | You can't overdose with Tetra SafeStart, so I would just add the whole bottle. |

| | Moderator | I agree with john ..dont use partial bottles as you dont know what amount of bacteria is added and left in the bottle...use the entire thing.... |

| | Fish Mentor | Is it possible that if you put in too much safe start, so it's a lot of bacteria, then you won't have enough ammonia to feed the bacteria, causing it to die off?
Just curious. |

Just curious. | Some will most likely die off but their should be enough ammonia for enough bacteria to feed on to cycle the tank. In the end you should end up with the right amount of bacteria for your tank. |

Just curious. | very possible and most likely what will happen..but that route is much much safer than not adding enough or using partial bottles and most of the bacteria is left in the bottle and not enough in the tank..its recommended to never use partial bottles to begin with ... |

| | Fish Addict | I have just bought safe start as my son added too many fish to my tank one day with out me knowing which has caused a bactierial bloom( little git). do a water change(about 30%) then add safe start (5ml to every 6 ltrs). Dont mess with the tank or water and it should rectify itself within 7 - 10 days. Hope this helps.

| | Fish Addict | It's upto you m8. Personaly i would do exactly what it says on the bottle. Just remember i am going on uk litres not us. 5ml to every 6 litres, stick to this and it should sort itself out.
Good luck.
P.s. you could always add amonia if you want to put the whole bottle in but i dnt advise it. |

| | Fish Mentor | Worderfulge, I'm at work and don't have the time to start at page one and get back up to speed on the history of this thread, so forgive me if I make some inncorrect assumptions.
When using SafeStart you should always put the full bottle in. You cannot overdose, and less than a full bottle runs the risk of underdosing since you don't know exactly how much bateria would remain in the bottle versus what made it into the tank.
If you have fish in the tank, there is no need to put extra food in the tank. If you don't have fish, go get them. SafeStart is designed to be added along with fish. If you have some fish, but plan on getting more, get them and add them with the SafeStart.
Good Luck! |
