fish tanks during a power outage

Hello, here in california we have a storm passing through that has knocked out our power a couple times and I am wondering which part of my aquarium to keep running ( i have an emergency generator) the filter or the heater .

thats a tough one.

What sort of temperature is your house during the storm with no power? if its still quite warm I would run the filter as the tank should be ok.

definitely filter IMO....we have major winter outages here in the north east...im so not ready for that...in cali, the heat shouldnt be as much an issue and if it is, it drops slowly..but lack of oxygen can kill fast

I would say filter then for definite, especially as you arent in a cold environment.

Hello JView. I agree that the filter should be run. You could also alternate between the two should the temperature become a real issue. The temperature will not fall as fast in larger tanks compared to smaller ones.
Great link above to another thread on this same subject.
Best of luck!

If the power goes out here, which it does fairly often (a sparrow only has to pass wind on the power lines *rolleyes*) my filters, lights, heaters stay off until the power restarts. I've had it go off in winter for 8 hours with no adverse effects

Make sure too watch out for air pumps as the water can flow out of the inline tubes, get a check valve if you do have one.

I say the filter, but if it's cold the heater. (or you could turn on the heater and if it starts to get cold switch to the heater and switch back when it's right again.

Now that I've spent thousands on fish, I should probably get a generator..... kinda scared that two years ago, there was a power outage lasted a week over here.
