the more I think about it

Initially I was going to put my livebeares in my new 72 gal bow front tank and redo my 35 gal with something totally different. The more I think about it, the guppies and platies will soon take over the new tank just like they did the old one. I was going to go with 2 br and 2 angels with a few cories for the 35 but now I think I need to consider what to do about the many many more fry that will come in the big tank. Maybe I should put something in that will control the population but I am not sure what So far none of the fish I have are going after or eating the fry (that I know of) and if they are its not many.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. As much as I love the babies, I will still have only so much room for them...................

How tall is your 35gal? I would normally say that is too small to have an angel in, unless it is a deep tank. A standard dimension 35 isn't really suitable at all IMO.

To control the fry population you could go for something like Zebra Danios, many of the Tetras especially Black Widows or maybe even a Keyhole or two. You would try not to have a breeding pair of keyholes though as that would cause problems as soon as they try to breed.

I already have leopard danios and they have not bothered much with the fry.

My 35 gal is not a tall tank, its about 17-18 in deep. I have never seen seahorses anywhere in my area and I always thought they were more of a novelty than something to seriously keep. I remember as a kid we had those sea monkey kits, not sure if thats the same thing. I love this forum, I learn something everyday.

Thanks much

I think Sea Monkeys are just brine shrimp. Sea Horses are pretty cool, but they are Salt Water fish. If you want to travel into Blackwood NJ (just off Rt 42 on Blackwood-Clemonton Rd), there is a LFS called "The Aquarium Center" that has them. You may want to take a ride there someday even if you are not interested in Sea Horses. They have just about every type of fish that is out there. I buy all my fish there.

keep the livebeares in the 35 and use the 72 for others ( that should throw another loop in there )

Good Morning Shawnie,

The livebeares have taken over the 35, thats why I got the bigger tank. It now has 5 cories, 2 danios, 3 platies, 3 adult female guppies, 6 juvie guppies (3male and 3 female) and 15-20 new babies and 1 gold mystery snail. I was considering separating the males out but I still think that is too many fish in the tank. Either way I need to consider some population control at some point and since I have this new tank now is as good a time as ever.

Too many decisions to make without enough knowledge is a little scary

maybe you could put the boys in one tank and the girls in the other - kind of how my college did the dorms.

I would say the angelfish would be a fry-eater. That should help with population control. The bolivian rams should help as well.

Good Morning BB,

Do you think I should put them all together in the 72. That would leave me with the delema of figuring out what to put in the 35 all over again

Oh, no, if you put the angels with the guppies and you won't have any guppies left.

You could just take out any fry you see and non-chalantly put the fry in the angel/ram tank. Population control

Oh my, I dont think I can do that, it would break my heart. I meant If they were to have someone in the tank and just let nature take its course.

Okay, how about this, what if you put one ram in your 72g with your livebearers and/or possibly decrease the hiding places for the babies? That would allow nature to take its course and should give you the desired outcome of population control.

Now we are on the same page. I really think these bolivian rams are beatiful. Cant wait to get the tank set up.

You could actually have two in the 72g, unless you're wanting to keep extra space in case two in the 35g cause problems.

We have two bolivians in our 55 tropical community. We love them!
