moving fish to a new tank

So, I picked up my 72 gallon bow front yesterday and the plan is to move all of my fish from the 35 gal to it. Once I get the tank set up I am going to use one of the filters from the 35 to help jump start the cycle. The 72 has a aquaclear 110 which I will start also. Should I just put the media from the 35 or put the entire filter on it for a while? How should I move the fish, a little at a time or all of them? The tank came with a 200 watt aqueon heater is that enough wattage?

Any thing that I missed, please fill me in

I usually move the entire filter, BUT I also run two filters on most of my tanks.

Since you're moving the fish from the 35 to the 72, I'd definitely move the filter since it has most of the bacteria to hold the cycle of the 35g inhabitants. This should keep you from having any spikes in the new tank. You could also add the filter you'll be running on the 35 to the 72 for a few weeks to gather some more bacteria to help cycle your 35 before you stock it.

Hope this helps! Congratulations again

My 35 has two filters, so I will not loose the cycle. I also planned to leave the 2 danios in the 35 until I got the new fish for it.

What about moving the rest of the fish?

Take a look as I also posted a pic of the 72 in a new thread, its really a beaut.

Thanks for all of your help BB.

If you're moving the filter, I'd move all of the fish except the two Danios that you're using to hold the cycle. Test the water every few days just in case for a few weeks and you should be good.

I've upgraded my fish to bigger tanks more often that I'd like to admit and as long as I move the filters with them, I've never had an ammonia spike after the move. I am paranoid, so I keep an eye on my water parameters for a few weeks after the move just to be sure.

be careful with the 35..moving a filter is going to cause some die off with the remaining filter because you are lowering the stock(ammonia source) by allot...but a mini cycle is easier to come out of than starting over....

When I upgraded tanks, I moved all the fish along with all the filtration and gravel at one time. I know this worked without any mini cycles showing up. If you move one of your two filters over, I would think that it would be safe to move over half the fish with it.

What you could do is move all the fish and filtration to your new tank, and run the new AC110 alongside. Wait a week or two for the bacteria to establish in the AC110. Then, you could move the danios back to the 35 with one of the filters. This way, you're only removing a small portion of the bacteria at a time.

Congrats on the new tank! WIsh I had space for one that big!

Yes, if your tank is set up in a room that is a comfortable temp. to you.
Your 72G should very slowly change temps (large tank = more stable temps and params.) and your 200 watt heater
should be able to keep up unless it's alot less than 70 degrees in the room.

If your home is drafty in the winter, keep an eye on the temps. and be ready to add a second heater if
the heater runs constantly and the temp is still too low.
If the heater runs constantly, it will burn out (wear out) sooner, leaving you with none
on the coldest day of the year (which is the way my luck would run).

Hello Red. Hope you're doing well. I would like to recommend adding the new bio media from the Aqua Clear 110 to the 35g tank and leave there for at least 2 weeks if not 3. Let it get seeded. Don't add any more stock to your 35g until you've made the move. Move the bio media into the Aqua Clear 110 and the fish as well after it's seeded. Then you can start restocking your 35g. Don't let the 35g lose it's cycle so add some new fish right away as well. Or only transfer over a few fish at a time.
Something to think about

Sounds like a good idea Ken but where would I put the bio media from the 110 in the 35 gal tank? I doubt that it would fit in either of the filters I have

As far as transferring the fish, hopefully I will be able to catch them all at the same time but if not its ok. I will keep you posted. I have to figure out where I am going to put the new tank first so it will be a few weeks.

Thanks much
