Hi,
I am currently using a Penguin 200 on my 30g community tank. However, I am thinking of switching to canister (not both, though - my tank is new and I can return the penguin). The plus side for me to keep the penguin is that it is already hooked up. The plus side to a canister would be that our tank is between 2 rooms, and the current setup really hurts to view from one room.

Can anyone tell me what the best filter is for a 30-gallon tank? Thanks!

I wouldnt switch out your filter mid cycling...unless you keep ALL the media from your penquin and put it in the new filter....depending on what brand of canister you are looking at, there are a ton ....you want something thats got at least 300gph ...search on fishlore ...theres a bunch of different threads about canisters

keep your old filter going even if you get a canister until your tank is cycled then remove it and its always smart to have a backe for each tank incase of a ilter failure!!! i like the plen plaxx canisers try the cascade 1000 should be cheap on the net ........i use 2 on my overstocked african tank

keeping the old media shouldn't be a problem - i can also run them together for a few days - I decided on a Fluval 205, hope that's a good one!

I have a Fluval 205 and I really like it a lot. It works great and is very easy to maintain.
