Tetra safestart

Does it need to be refrigerated? If I buy it from a petstore that has it on a shelf, will be bacteria be dead? I've tried to search for the information, but I can't find it.

Thanks!

Yep, off the shelf is fine.
I'm not quite sure how they did it, but it's quite an improvement over BioSpira, which cost a ton primarily because of shipping costs (it had to be shipped quickly, and it had to be kept cold).

I would assume it is like Seachem Stability in that the bacteria is in a spore state that can survive for a while in less than ideal conditions. When it finds itself in the water with food to eat, it turns into the live active bacteria.

So far, nobody has been able to make aquatic nitrifying bacteria that go into spore form. Stability and the like use terrestrial nitrifying bacteria which only temporarily cycles the tank. The bacteria die off fairly quickly (because they're not built to survive in water), leaving the tank uncycled.
