Looking to get a 90 gallon tank...Starphire vs. Acrylic

I am a prospective owner (no fishies until my research is done!) and trying to decide what kind of tank to get.

My plans are to photograph the fish and I was wondering if Starphire (low-iron glass) was worth the extra cost over regular glass. I know acrylic is a very different kind of material, but would it be better for photographing the fish through?

If anyone could give me the pros and cons of Starphire and acrylic I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi - welcome to Fish Lore.

Not sure on a comparison between starphire and acrylic... But I do know that my next custom tank will definitely have starphire glass on the front and sides since I do a lot of photography and have seen starphire tanks in person. To my eyes starphire "looks" better than acrylic and it doesn't scratch as easily which could interfere with picture taking, focusing the camera, etc.

Is this going to be a saltwater tank or freshwater? Saltwater tanks get coralline algae which can wreak havoc with acrylic if not removed carefully.

This is going to be freshwater. I don't think I'd be ready to handle a saltwater tank as a beginner Though I have to admit, I think saltwater fish are more interesting.

Thanks for the tip! I probably won't go with acrylic then. Scratches would definitely hamper taking good photos.

Agree with Mike. Go for the starphire, its much better. You'll definitely be able to tell a difference. Heck, your house windows might not even look the same anymore! Like Mike says, acrylic scratches easy, and though you can buff scratches out....some are just to deep.

What company are you going through to get the tank? The LFS? Seperate company? I just ask because its much cheaper just to get one side or a couple sides of Starphire and the rest normal glass. This gives you a photography window but won't totally break the bank.

I saw some online: http://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=58

Don't think the pet store I went to would even have a clue as to what Starphire is... Much less sell them. Still trying to find a decent LFS around here that specializes in freshwater fish to see if they'll give me any good tips. I was unsatisfied with the answers I got at Petco.

Cool, yeah i know people who have worked with glasscages before, they seemed to like their purchase.

Where are you located? Perhaps someone here is close and could recommend a few LFS.
